Canada People from the US: what's your opinion on Canadian Blu-rays?

I haven't bought a canadian blu-ray yet, but I think it's time to give it some thought, since 2 interesting titles (The Cell and The Others) are coming out.

So I want to know, how is your opinion on Canadian BD's? Have you had good experiences buying them BD's ?

If you're talking about the Alliance titles that are currently exclusive to Canada (like The Cell and The Others), the quality has been hit and miss. They don't come with any extras, and a few titles have been in the wrong aspect ratio and/or 1080i. On the other hand, the prices are quite reasonable. The best thing to do is to do some research before ordering any of these discs.

Here are some thoughts on the Canadian titles I own:

A Nightmare on Elm Street - Has noticeable DNR, but still looks pretty good.

Requiem for a Dream - Looks average, but I think it probably looks the way it was intended. The DVD has a lot of extras that you don't get here.

Freddy vs. Jason/Sin City - Very good PQ, but the U.S. releases are the way to go now since the Canadian discs are bare bones.

D.O.A. - Looks good, although the intentional filtering means the picture isn't as detailed as it could be.

From Dusk Till Dawn - Looks great, no complaints, really.

Couldn't have said it better meself.

Some people have issues with having both english & french on the covers. Not all discs have this, but if you think it'll annoy you...

Thanks everybody for your help.

It looks like those Canadian BD's deserve a chance.

I think I'm going to get at least one of the titles, and see by myself how it goes.

The Illusionist --> Amazing transfer, but no special features

Good Will Hunting --> I think the picture is awesome. Might want to hold out, as Disney should be bringing out the US disc in '09

None of the Canadian blu-rays I'm interested in have any extras. I'll just wait for US releases instead of these barebones discs.

I fully agree with this analysis. Each title needs to be investigated on a case by case basis because Alliance has released some awful exclusives and some decent exclusives.

I haven't bought a Canadian BD. Alliance is to inconsistent with their quality, and almost none of their releases have extras.

The only Canadian releases that I have are Ronin (actually cheaper to get to the US from Amazon.ca than buying the US version on Amazon.com even though the discs are identical) and Good Will Hunting, which has exceptional PQ and a nice DTS-HD MA track. I wasn't concerned with extras and can live with the French/English spine art, so it will be a keeper for me even after the US release, whenever that is.

Virtually no difference, mainly the french on the cover art.

How can you tell if it's a Canadian market BD by looking at the case if there's no French wording:

- There's a Canadian rating logo printed at the left-lower back cover art location (a colored shape enclosed in a white circle). Inside the white circle you'll find the legend "Canadian Home Video Rating".

- At the central-lower back you'll find printed either "Distributed Exclusively in Canada by" or "Printed in Canada"

The US releases circulating in Canada have small stickers glued to the clear plastic with the Canadian rating logo and distribution information overlapping the original US cover art.

This method is not the most accurate way to tell if its a Canadian release as Sony, Warner, Paramount, Fox, and some Disney releases in the US include both the US rating and the Canadian rating on the back.

I do have a few HD dvd's with bi-lingual ( French & English ) and they are very good. Now if those are exact copies of what was released in the USA, but with just different covers it does not matter to me.

Currently, I'm desperatley wanting to get Outlander and After The Sunset on Blu ray, but unfortunally they are released by Alliance. And from just about everything I've read about Alliance, they f@%k up just about anything the put their hands on.

I got rid of my Sin City (Alliance)and got the superior U.S. version of it. I think the Canadian version is somewhat frowned upon here. Now I'm listing the Alliance version on eBay.

Is there a site that list Canadian only released blu ray? I'm just curious b/c I've never knew there was any differences--I just thought when US releases were done for movies it was always the same for Canada too.
