Thumbs up Ponyo on a Cliff *REVIEW*

Awesome. Miyazaki delivers again. This is more along the lines of Totoro though as it's more heartfelt and fairy tale like. No dark themes or images like in Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke.

Basic story is of a boy and a fish that wishes to be human.

There's even a cool song like at the end of Totoro.

Not sure of how the Disney dubbing will be as I saw a subtitled version.

Great film. Full recommendation.

I always love Miyasaki's movies, problably my favorite with anime. I say it's a safe bet about the English Dubs, since those are the best dubs in Anime, but I the only Dubs I do listen are from Hayao Miyasaki films (and Afro Samurai which has a very good dub)

I LOVE Miyazaki films, and got exposed to them ever since Princess Mononoke, and have not swayed from any movie from him since!! Can't wait for Ponyo to come out!!

Ponyo ... Sosuke ... Skeet!

I know she was supposed to say "Ponyo ... Sosuke ... I like you!" But I just burst out whenever I hear her say that.

Yeah the Japanese voice talent was excellent in the film. I hope the American cast can capture the innocence of Ponyo.

Some amazing images in this film too. This will look great on Blu-ray.

Oh, God! I have no hope in the English Dub, despite Liam Neeson doing the voice of Ponyo's father. I might buy it on Blu-Ray when it comes out. Hopefully, there's a US Blu-Ray since it's coming out in Japan at Christmas time.

Disney does a pretty good job handling the Miyazaki films on Blu. I want Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Mononoke more though. I could do without Howls Moving Castle.

I wonder if Warner still holds the rights to My Neighbor Totoro. I think a different company has the rights to Kiki's. Sad that Kiki's was the last think Phil Hartman ever did.

It was Fox who had My Neighbor Totoro. I was able to track down an old copy of the FOX DVD for my little sister. Disney owns the rights to them all. They just didn't release Princess Mononoke under their label and did it with Miramax since they felt it was too violent.

I heard the Fox DVD of My Neighbor Totoro was a technical nightmare, and the rerelease of that movie by Disney had gotten rid of the problems (Disney version was in widescreen, none of the bothersome edge enhancement, multichannel audio, offered Japanese with subtitles i think, the transfer didn't had the punchy unnatural color platete that made it look like a saturday morning cartoon, artifact clean (mostly), and many other problems I'm not gonna talk about). Has anyone ever seen Grave of the Fireflies? One truly sad War movie from Studio Ghibli. It's also their best film and I think one of the best War movies in a long time, about two kids during the bomb raids on japan during World War II, with their home burned down with their mother, father in the navy, moved to their aunt, very ungrateful, having to suffer from people that don't give a damn but themselves. Depressing, powerful, but not in that Hollywood sentimentalism, but in a rather realistic human nature manner. It was treated as a children's film, but wasn't released by disney due to the depressing nature, and some graphic war images (Such as their mother's body shown burnt), and depravity to the children. Still something definately woth watching, but the DVD may be hard to find.

I truly hope all Studio Ghibli films get a Bluray release as soon as possible. I'll buy them in a heartbeat. I've seen nearly all of them and I can't say that I've never liked one. They all bring something great to the table. I haven't seen Ponyo yet, but judging by the trailers I know I won't be let down. Miyazaki is a legend that will always live on through his work.

And Grave of the Fireflies was the most depressing movie I've ever seen in my life. I swear, my heart sunk into my stomach.

Yeah, I watched it before I gave it too her, it's in Full Screen and it looks like a VHS to DVD transfer even though there are no lines or anything going down the video, it just has that VHS to DVD transfer feel to it. It only has the English dub which is 2channel and there are no subs.

If it's the Japanese, believe that's "...S(u)ki-da!"
Not that she's shooting clay pigeons.

Yeah, it was something like that.

I don't know, I need to check to see if the theater in town is getting it.

It's not as dark as Spirited Away, I would rate it a bit lower than it because it targets a much younger audience.

I agree with the OP, I loved it. I saw the Japanese subtitled version, and I am gonna see the new dubbed English version. I am wondering what lines get changed. I already noticed a few in the trailers.

I've notices that the Cyrus girls doesn't capture the same innocense as the Japanese actress that portrays Ponyo. That voice brings so much to the movie.
