For almost a year I've been wondering how to take full advantage of my home theater setup. So I just want some tips, I have:
TV: Olevia 437 LCD Cable Box: Comcast HD Motorola Bluray: Sony BDP-S350 5 Disc DVD: Sony DVP-NC85H Audio Video Controller: Sony STR-DG510 Regular DVD Player. The connection goes like this Blu Ray and Cable Box go HDMI to the receiver, who send HDMI to the TV. The 5 disc go component and optical to the receiver and component to the TV, the DVD player goes composite to receiver and TV. I also have an IMAC computer, connected to the TV so I can use the LCD as a display. What else can I do to this setup? what else can I get to make it a better home theater? Any tips? |

you will have to use the optical cable you are prolly using to get the best possible audio, main thing is the reciever needs to be upgraded to get HD audio and only use and HDMI cable for audio and video.
What is it you are trying to accomplish and what is the budget? |

Blu-ray player to AVR via HDMI for video, blu-ray player to Receiver via optical for Audio? Correct? this is the best you can do it. HD Cable you have to do the same as above with the cable box. HDMI for video, Optical for Audio. DVD players (5 disc & regular) one can be hooked up via the Yellow RCA in labeled DVD for video and then use the Coaxial in for audio, use the yellow video out on the far right for video out to the TV. the other just hook it up via the RCA ins(red white and yellow) and go out via the RCA video out(yellow) right next to it for video to the TV. This will only give you left and right front audio tho. This last part in italicies may or may not work, never done it before, but it looks right. Best thing you can do is get a new receiver. The 510 and 710 were pretty much the most basic you can get, which is why I upgrade after just 7 months. |

I know about computers and have built one before and can hook my HT system up to one if I had to and configure it, BUT I am not into computers very much so dont consider me the primary source for this topic. |

You're limited to what you have. There's nothing else you can do with that equipment. There's no way an iMac will improve your video/audio processing...it's a computer, not a receiver.
