Canadian boxer Arturo "Thunder" Gatti has been found dead in a hotel room in northeastern Brazil.

The 37-year-old's body was found Saturday morning at an exclusive coastal resort in Porto de Galinhas, according to a spokeswoman from Brazil's Pernambuco state.

Gatti, a one-time junior welterweight champion, had arrived at the resort on Friday with his wife and young son.

It wasn't immediately clear how Gatti died.

"There were no bullet or stab wounds on his body, but police did find blood stains on the floor," the spokeswoman said.

She added that Gatti's wife and son were unhurt.

Gatti was born in Italy but moved to Montreal with his family. He retired from boxing in 2007.
