Smile Tone adjustment on Onkyo reciever

I was recently reading an article in Home Theater mag. about costless tweaks to your home theater. In the article the writer said to 0 the db levels on your tone controls. So i'm watching my blu copy of Knowing that night and instead of turning the volume down to unaudible levels I adjusted the bass on the tone control to -10 db's. not only did it sound better but the next day when i turned it up to referance levels my speakers seemed to have better clarity and dynamics. anyone else tried this out there?

I have not, and I do not think I will. I have trust in my SPL meter to provide clarity and balance. I don't doubt what you heard, but for myself, if I tried something like that, I would suffer from some kind of placebo effect, which wouldn't be the first time either. So, I'll stick to my SPL meter and the peace of mind it provides for my set-up.
