Same here - slipcover. Picked it up for $28 on release day (well 3 days before actually). The entry in the database has a scan I did of both the front and reverse of the slipcover. Features are identical and really the only difference is the non-English audio options and subs which on ours are actually superior (DTS audio as opposed to DD).

If you're watching the movie or features in English then the experience will be the same regardless of if it's the US or AU release.

I just finished watching this, I haven't watched it on blu in a while, but noticed in some scenes the dialogue has a faint high pitched ringing sound accompanying it, and it's quite irritating. I noticed it 1st (in the theatrical cut) at 7 minutes 11 seconds where Rourke's henchman is talking to 11 year old Nancy who is tied up, and it just continued from there, not during all of the dialogue but a decent amount of it. Is it possible if someone else who owns the Australian blu-ray version can check if their copy does this as well? I've also checked the Extended disc and the same issue is present.

Checked it out. There are some instances where you hear some sounds. What you're hearing is actually background noise from the original dialogue take. That dialogue hasn't been ADR'ed and so you're hearing a bit of the stage noise, clothing ruffles etc. They've applied a noise gate and/or compression (which is standard practice) to limit the noise when the dialogue isn't being spoken so what you hear is the background noise showing up "behind" the dialogue when spoken and then being gated in the gaps between the dialogue. There's only so much that can be done to limit it without affecting the dialogue. Short of ADRing the dialogue doing much more such as tweaking the EQ to take some high out would make the actual dialogue sound muddy.

I'm not sure how you've calibrated your system but if on the off chance your centre channel is running a little loud and a little hot on the treble I could easily see this being more noticeable/distracting. Not saying that's the case for you but it definitely would exacerbate the issue. For me it wasn't too bad. You can definitely tell it's there though - it was most noticeable when Klump was talking to Shlub about Roark Jr.'s car. A few of Del Toro's lines also had it too due to his softer, more gravelly delivery.

Generally you'll find this cropping up where original dialogue takes have been used in scenes that are set outside on location or on TV shows where they don't have time and money to ADR every single line. For a great example of how to do it completely wrong check out Depp's escape scene from the start of Public Enemies. They're in a car so there's a crapload of noise in the lapel mics and as Michael Mann's not one to ADR nowadays and they didn't bother to compress and gate it's near impossible to make out the dialogue.

Thanks for checking and the helpful info. I did change some of the calibration setting of my receiver recently, so it probably added to it, as I don't remember hearing it during my last viewing of Sin City to the extent I heard it today. I'll revert back to my old settings, hopefully that makes it better. I've been meaning to use an SPL meter and the AIX audio calibration disc which I've had for a while, so I might see how I go with it tomorrow.

Has anyone here bought the US release from September 2020?

Does it have a higher bit rate? Is it better quality?

The local release due out in 2 days is reported as having a bit rate of 22mbps which seems a bit paltry!

They're all the exact same transfer. 22mbps is plenty for that movie, it's mostly black and white anyway.
