Default Unique Equipment..for this site ;)

We have people that have different taste on this site. We also have people of similar taste. We have what is known as "fanboism" and even "elitism" . We have highend people that have similar speakers - especially in the B&W camp - no one can argue that the 802N is not one of the best speakers made. However, I have started this thread to take notice of members with speakers or equipment that is rarely - if at all, duplicated on this site. If I missed you give me a shout out. Here's my compiled list and their "uniqueness"

FORCE - Kef Reference series - the only ones on the site
Compost - Tannoy Speakers and Tube gear
Shockabuku - Sonus Faber Speakers - only ones on the site
Bigread7078 - Vienna Acoustics
Tassie Devil - Sound Labs (those are some great electrostats)!
KWilson - Carver Amazing Loudspeakers Silver
BennyZ - JM Labs
Brain Strurgeon - Classe Power Amps
Woody - Von Schweikert speakers - most underrated system on this site
Squozen - Richter Speakers
Sorkman14 - Quad
Mark H - Meridian system
Naturephoto - His turntable qualifies him alone - he also owns Nola speakers
Nikosmilonakis - Phase Tech speakers
John72953 - Totem speakers

These people have not only good systems but they have pieces of gear (namely speakers) that set them apart from everyone else (or to say it better - they have things not duplicated by others). Many people may not know anything about their equipment but I gurantee you that its quality. They have stuff other than the basic starter system or the high-end B&W (except for Brain - He's in this list for his amp ). If you have a unique piece of gear or interesting piece in your HT, chime in and tell us about it

Interesting thread Rich! I hope many people will come and read it and that the owners mentioned in your list will chime in and provide some opinion on how and/or why they chose the componants they did.

In my case I wanted to accomplish one basic thing and that was to find a sound that would compliment and enhance my vinyl music listening choices. I did not take into consideration how CD would sound, as my primary listening is done on a 2-channel analog setup. I did however listen to some SACD and the Totem's handled them very well. But back to vinyl.

I listen to mostly blues, jazz, progressive rock, classic rock, some classical, and a lot of female recording artists. It is the last one mentioned that made me decide on the Totem speakers. Artists like Ricky Lee Jones, Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, Annie Lennox, Adele, Etta James, Tori Amos, Jennifer Warnes and on and on, are so beautifully interpreted on Totem speakers that I knew I had to own them.

For the record, one does not need to spend a fortune on Totem speakers either. A pair of Dreamcather compacts start at $500 and the Arro floorstander can be had for about $1100 or $1200 a pair. They are wonderfully coherant, have excellent off-axis dispersion, a solid and very convincing soundstage/presence, and they are beautifully crafted. I couldn't happier with the choices I made.

John

Didn't someone also just build a room for his Vandersteen (sp?) speakers? That's pretty unique, no?

Rich,

You should also include Rich Teer for his Forsell Turntable and his speakers as well.

Thanks, Richteer definately for his turntable, but as for his speakers - I would go with his older ones (we have quite a few Martin Logan users on this site) but no Spendor users I've seen Richteers old speakers and they are fabulos and once again, unique for this site (not to mention his Turntable too!)

Vinyl lovers - a challange, if you love jazz, check out old classic black gospel music on vinyl if you can find it! If you want to hear the Hammond B-3 in a new exciting way - get it! Record lables include Savoy, Light, and Malaco.

Hi Rich,

Thanks very much for putting this list together and starting this thread. I wanted to also mention in my case about the Time Portal Speakers that Dave Schulte of the Upgrade Company is building for me. The L & R channel mirror imaged line stage towers are basically the first production run of these as is the Center Channel Speaker which will be a half tower in height with half the number of drivers. Below is my recent posting in the 2009 Expenditure thread:

As I have mentioned in this and other threads, each mirror imaged line stage tower consists of 16 woofers, 8 soft dome tweeters, and 8 soft dome midrange drivers for a total of 32 drivers per tower. The center channel speaker will be basically half as tall with half the number of drivers as the mirror imaged towers.

Work on the 3 speakers should hopefully start in the middle of August. It is going to take many months to prepare and finish the speakers. They will be made in an automotive or what could be considered a Piano Black. All of the speaker drivers will be visible without any speaker covers to impede the audio performance. I hope that the house and the listening/home theater room will be completed to bring the new speakers into listening/home theater room in December.

The side surround speakers and the rear channel speakers for the 7.1 surround speakers will be prepared and based upon the main towers and built hopefully starting in around February or March. The side surrounds will probably consist of 12 drivers per side and will probably prepared as towers to position the speaker drivers at the proper height and to avoid the need for pedestals and reducing the chance of being knocked over. We are still considering designs for the rear 2 channel speakers. All of the surround speakers will also be in an automotive or piano black with all drivers visible without any speaker covers.

You should link their user names to their galleries (or HT threads) if available so those not familiar with the set-ups, I haven't seen a few myself, can find them easily.

Rich,

Where are all of the updates? For that matter, where is the interest from the rest of the forum community?
