Post Subwoofer Questions

Sub Woofer Questions

First An Update:Getting my gear is taking a little longer than expected and thanks to everyone that has helped me so far.

I have just realized I never read the Sub Woofer Stickies I totally forgot about them oops, but now that I have read some of them I have some questions about subs in general and also about the one I choose which is Klipsch 12” 650W Powered Sub Woofer Model:SUB-12

Note: I have not read the Cross Over Network Sticky Thread yet I will read that one later

Here Are The Questions

General Questions

1.In The Sticky I read there is some information about harmful electro magnetic fields how concerned should I be about that if I plan on using my HT a lot?

2.If my Room Layout allows me to do so should I go with two Klipsch 12” 650W Powered Sub Woofer Model:SUB-12 Sub Woofers to get more Bass?

3.Iknow you can connect an External Sub Amp to a Passive Sub can the same be done with powered ones like the one I chose?

4.If My Room Allows should I get 2 Klipsch Sub Woofers to get more bass and feel more rumbling in movies?

Questions About the Sub I have chosen

1.Since the beginning multiple Forum Members have told me to get a different Sub than I one I have chosen is the sub I chose bad is there something wrong with the model I have chosen?

2.Does the sub I chose have a phase switch?

Thanks In Advance For Your Replys

  1. Electromagnetic fields can create noises and hums. That is why it is a good idea to use an RG6 sub cable instead of an ordinary RCA cable. RG6 cables have good shielding and can be used for longer lengths. A few years ago, I bought ordinary RCA cables from Radio Shack and connected the receiver to the sub amps. Everytime I touched the cables or moved them, I could hear a hum from the subwoofers. I replaced the cables with RG6 sub cables and the problem went away.
  2. Two subwoofers will always work better than one. The bass waves have long wavelengths. They interact with the room boundaries (walls, ceiling, and floor) and create standing waves. The result of these standing waves is that the bass will be very uneven and you will get hot and cold spots in the room. To make the bass sound more even across the room for all listening position, two or four subwoofers are required.
  3. I am not sure I understand this question fully. Yes, you can connect an external amp to a powered subwoofer, but why? There are impedance considerations when you connect two amplifiers to a single driver. Furthermore, if the two amplifiers are not identical, one amplifier ends up driving the other one.
  4. Although with two subwoofers you can create more bass output and more rumble, the real reason for two subwoofer is explained in #2.

Questions about the sub:
  1. No, the Klipsch subwoofers are not bad. However, there are other options such as Hsu Research, Elemental Designs, SVS, and AV123. They are factory-direct companies and give you a better value for your money.
  2. Yes, the Klipsch subs have a phase switch.

@ Bluray Freak 2009, have you heard the Klipsch Sub-12? Is that the reason you like or have you been told by other to get it?

I honestly love that sub, I havn't heard the internet direct subs to compare. I can only go by what I like in bass and when I heard this thing hit, I had to have two.

There is nothing wrong with this sub, not at all!

Thumbs up Replys

@ Big Daddy

1.So based on what you said I don't have to worry about Electro Magnetic Fields they apply to Equipment and not humans? Am I understanding this correctly

2.I will buy two then if I decide too and place them by the Front Speakers to eliminate the hot and cold spots.

3.Based on the threads I have read I am thinking of getting a Separate Amp in the Future To power my speakers.

4.I understand now

Questions about the sub
1.Thanks for Clearing that up I was worried that I had made a bad choice.
2.Thanks for Clearing that up

@ HAMP I have not heard that sub in person because it was not hooked up but I have heard the XW-500d but since I couldn't audition the other one I can't compare them,I am going by the reviews on the internet, and the advice from members on this Forum.

Thanks

1. I was not talking about the effect of electromagnetic fields on human health. I was only referring to hum and noises from subwoofers. Electromagnetic fields can have an effect on humans, but the exposure has to be significant. If you live next door to a power station, I would recommend that you change your place of residence. Chances are that your TV, phone, and wi-fi receptions will be very poor and you will also turn into a zombie.

You don't have to worry about home theater.

2. For best placement of two subwoofers, check the end of Post #1 and the beginning of Post #2 in A Guide to Subwoofers (Part II).

  1. Some older receivers do not have LFE output (sub out). Your only option is to use speaker wires from the front right and left and connect them to the high-level inputs and connect your speakers to the high level outputs. If you connect your subwoofer to the front speaker outputs, you must set the front speakers to large (full-range) and set subwoofer to NO. This type of connection is also useful with two-channel receivers/preamps setup in a 2.1 speaker system.
  2. You mean your receiver has one sub output. Normally, you connect a single sub cable from the receiver's sub output to the left channel input on the back of the sub. However, if you use a Y adapter (2 male, 1 female) and connect the sub cable to both the right and the left inputs on the back of the sub, you may get up to 3dB to 6dB of additional output on some subwoofers.

Post More Sub Questions

@ Big Daddy

1.So You are saying it to use a Y Adapter connect that to the Sub Out which is black

2.What do I do If I want to connect multiple subs though can I?

3.It looks like I have two Sub outputs or is the second one for the other zones?

Here is the link To The Receiver I am getting can you look at the back of the receiver to see how I can connect multiple subs to it.

My Denon receiver is the previous version of the 4310 receiver. It only had one output for the subwoofer.

If you want to connect multiple subwoofers to one subwoofer output on the receiver, you can use Y adapters (1 male, 2 female). I have 4 subwoofers connected to one LFE output on my receiver with the help of three Y adapters (1 male, 2 female) and 4 sub cables.

If your receiver has two subwoofer outputs, you do not need a Y adapter and can connect each subwoofer to one of the outputs.

1.So You are saying it to use a Y Adapter connect that to the Sub Out which is black.... Run a single line to the sub and then you can use a Y-Splitter to plug both inputs on the subwoofer. In this case you would use the Y-splitter(1-female, 2-male)

2.What do I do If I want to connect multiple subs though can I?....In this case, if you want to hook up two subs with one output from your receiver, you will need three Y-splitters, the first Y-splitter(1-male, 2-female) will plug into the receiver. From the first splitter, you have two female spots, one will be into left subwoofer and the other into the right subwoofer. You run a single line from each of that splitter. Once you run that single line to each subwoofer, then read #1 reply for the rest

3.It looks like I have two Sub outputs or is the second one for the other zones?...I only see one subwoofer output, its the one with the white colored square around it

In my case, I connected all four subwoofers directly to the receiver and did not daisy chain them. Three of my subwoofers are passive and I use external amplifiers.

I inserted the male side of a Y adapter (1 male, 2 female) to the sub output on the back of the receiver. I then attached two additional Y adapters (1 male, 2 female) to the first Y adapter. This way, I created 4 outputs for my subwoofers. Finally, I attached four sub cables to the female side of the Y adapters and ran the cables to the back of the amps of all the subwoofers.

I plan on doing this when I move and after the forth subwoofer is built.

I am sort of doing this now, as I have 2 subs and also a buttkicker. So, I did the same thing as Big Daddy, except I don't use the other female end off of the Y-splitter out of the receiver, it just runs directly to a sub. The other female end of the Y-splitter out of the receiver, I have another Y-splitter feeding into a sub and the buttkicker amp.

How many subs are you planning on hooking up?

BD way is for four subs(or if a person wants, can just keep going).
I thought you were just doing two subs and the way I have it is for two.

Once you do it, you will see that there really is no difference between what BD has and I have, it's just adding Y-splitters in the right spot. Your just splitting the signal, that's all.
