Actually with the exception of the 1st book being the basis of the 1st season, none of the other seasons have followed ANY of the books.

So I doubt they'll start now.

Actually one aspect of the books that I WISH WISH WISH would be brought over to the series, although it wouldn't make sense because of the differences in the way these specific characters are in the book vs. TV series is the following:

****SPOILER FOR THE DEXTER BOOKS****

[Show spoiler]I wish they would go into the idea that Astor and Cody are just like Dexter, and that Dexter begins to teach them the "Code of Harry".

I think that would be absolutely crazy (in a good way), but I think that might be a bit much, even for Showtime.

That would not be to much, I think that it would be a logical progression and realy flesh out the series (as if it needed any). No matter how much I like the series, the books are better.

I personally would love it. However I can imagine there would be some hesitations on bringing on a topic such as
[Show spoiler]turning little children into serial killers.

I remember when the film Frailty first came out, there were so many people outraged and screaming "Child Abuse" and things like that. I can imagine this would be even more so, because of the higher profile.

But it wouldn't work because Astor & Cody are completely different in the books and series. The books they're withdrawn, barely speaking. The show they're way more ...kid like.

Your first point has already been done with Dexter' childhood.

Your second point is very valid, but so what. If people do not like it they should not watch. Most people who watch the show know the subject matter is questionable already.

Third point, differences can be over come with the power of good script writers.

That new one sounds interesting.

So the first season is similar to the book? Would I be fine starting with the second book then?

Thanks for the news OP!

Read the 1st book because there are things that happened in there that didn't happen in the series.

On October 21, 2008, Showtime renewed the series for a fourth and fifth season, each consisting of 12 episodes. Production was stated to begin in early 2009, with season four premiering September 27

Just far enough away for me to read the first 2 books. My boss just ave me $50 for my birthday so I bought the first 2 books plus a graphic novel and it cost $49.94 pretty well done if I say so myself.

Also, glad to see there will be at least 1 more season after this (though it makes sense considering Dexter brought Showtimes numbers above HBO).

I'm officially hooked on Dexter. I'm two episodes from finishing the second season that I started 2 days ago. I have the first book and it thrills me beyond belief that the tv show and books are different after season 1, because then I have 2 Dexter stories going at once. Man, I haven't been this addicted to a tv show since Arrested Development.

Awesome series - I watched Season 1 during one weekend, then Season 2 the next weekend.

Can't wait for Season 3 to come out on blu-ray.

I feel like I'm the only person who caught on, because if you watch the first season there are subtle hints strewn about that might've indicated that the writers were leaning towards this, but the hints stopped at the start of the second season, um I don't know how to do the whole *spoilers* thingie so if you don't want to know certain plot points stop reading this now, okay so one of the main things I noticed was when dexter rita and the kids went looking for halloween costumes, and Cody pretended to stab dexter with a fake knife, there were others, but I don't really recall the specifics, it seems to me that these little hints were being thrown in to foreshadow later events but after the first season the writers seemed to have dropped the idea, if you go back and watch the first season you'll probably see what I mean, it's a shame too, because the astor and cody segments are some of the funnier moments in the books, which would've translated well to the show in many ways

I really don't get how people become hooked to the show like this, I firmly believe that if this show didn't have Michael C. Hall then it wouldn't be that popular, this show is pretty standard for a drama series (aside from the premise which the books already had so no big deal there), but I'll continue to watch this show as long as Dexter continues to let his dark passenger do the driving.

You're sad for not being hooked. The premise is the hook. And like you said, that's what makes it different. So what if it's been done in the books, this isn't a book. It's a tv show. That's not to say I'm not hooked on the books either. Not to a teenage girl "Twilight" level, but they're probably in my top 5 book series.
