Default Is it worth the money?

So I've been using my PS3 as my primary Blu-ray player for a while now. But I am currently moving into a brand new house where I am given full reign over my home theater setup. So far I'm going for the Samsung PN50B650 50" plasma TV with a Denon AVR-3808CI audio receiver. Obviously it's turning out to be very nice considering how much money I've gotten off on these products, so I've got about 700 dollars left over.

I just bought a Logitec Harmony One remote, and while beginning to set it up in premature excitement, and I noticed that if I wanted to control my PS3 as a Blu-ray player using it I would have to buy a 60 dollar add on... something I really don't want to do. I've also heard that the PS3 is not the best Blu-ray player I could really get, and if I used a different standalone player it would benefit me much more on video and audio quality if I really wanted to get the most out of my system.

So the question is... what should I do? Should I buy the addon for the PS3 for 60 dollars? Or should I buy a standalone Blu-ray player for however much it would cost... maybe the Panasonic DMP-BD35?

I apologize for any confusing language and whatnot, I'm a little hopped up on pain killers.

Just my opinion but I really do not think you will be able to notice a difference between blu players. I am toggling between my PS3 and a $99 Insignia right now and there is ZERO change in PQ/AQ. Anywho, I can understand your frustrations with the Harmony and the PS3. I have the 1000 and purchased a $20 adapter for the PS3 that allows me to control it. The only downside is it will not turn the PS3 on/off, but I have to put the blu in and take it out anyway so for me it made no difference. I would use the extra $$$ on some upgraded speakers

If I had the money I would look into the Oppo 83 player. Speed of the ps3, best upconversion, along with SACD and DVD-A playback. I switched from a ps3 to a Sony BDP-s550 when it first came out and i am much happier. It is nice to be able to use one remote and bitstream the audio. I may be wrong but I think the PS3 add on does not give you the ability to use all functions and is limited to the basics.

I second the Oppo player. I have a Panny BD-35 and Ive never had any problems, but if I was shopping now, I would get the Oppo without hesitation.

I agree with the others - the Oppo is currently the best blu-ray player on the market.

the ps3 is primarily a gaming console, the basic functionality you speak of is if your watching a movie, well, that's all you really need. you can't nor won't play a game with the remote and sending an email or IM with the remote is just as much "fun" as it is with the controller.

I think if your playing a game, use the controller from start to finish if your watching a movie, get an Oppo!

seriously, i have thought about getting that add-on for my harmony one but i realized that i no longer watch movies on my ps3 so why bother. when playing a game with my ps3 the harmony one sets everything else up to where it needs to be and i grab my ps3 controller and turn the console on and play a game. when i'm done, i turn the ps3 off with my controller, take the harmony one and either turn everything else off or watch tv or a movie.

so your is it worth it will really come down to how much luxury do you want or need. there is nothing wrong with the ps3 for movies either it's in the top 2 as far as i am concerned; right along side with the Oppo!

If you have spare cash you may upgrade the player. Oppo is a good all-rounder. However, PS3 is a very good blu-ray player and I expect that you know it has some limitations. If you can live with those like the need for a remote adapter (possibly about $20-30) you may improve other areas as getting a larger display....
