Here is the setup. I am building a PC for the sole purpose of watching web content on my TV. My dilemma. The motherboard/video card combo I am considering will output video via HDMI and audio via 3.5mm stereo. I plan to purchase a 3.5mm to RCA female cable adapter and appropriate length RCA cables to connect to the Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver.
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2 After reading the user manual, http://www.ch.onkyo.com/files.downlo...6_manual_e.pdf it is still unclear whether this will work. I want the video from the PC output to my TV like the other HDMI connected devices. I also want audio to come out the front left and front right speakers that surround my TV (not the TV speakers). If anyone else has attempted such a conversion, please let me know if this will work. Disclaimers: This is an extremely budget setup <$150 for all components, I have not found a cheap or within my budget video card or motherboard that will output audio and video via HDMI, I am open to potential motherboard, and video cards... |

Hello,
My HTPC is connected to my receiver via those analog cables. It does work. Any playback from your PC that emits sound will be sent to your receiver and come out from the speakers that the receiver is connected to. When connected like this to your PC via the 6 channel mode, they will become your PCs speakers. You'll be able to listen to music, movies, you tube videos, etc as long as they play back with sound. For surround sound you will have to set up both your operating system, playback software, and sometimes your sound card manufacturer driver control software accordingly to play that type of sound. Including quality i.e. 24 bit/48000hz, 24 bit/96000Hz, and so on. For the video, set up your video card with multiple monitors via the driver software control for your card and set up the TV as en extension of your desktop. You can then drag over the playback sofware to the tv and view it from there. For example, if you playback a video on windows media player, just drag it over to your TVs desktop and thats it. Expand for full screen or whatever you want. |

did you want to have the multichannel formats? or did you want the receiver to transcode it into dolby prologic ll?
if you wanted them to be in discrete 5.1, i think the soundcard should have either 1. coax (RCA Jack) or 2. Toslink or optical jack. let us know. |

You can just connect the speaker channels you want to the receiver, then just set your sound card to process only that which you want. Your sound card software and/or windows sound management should let you choose between 2.1, 4.1, 5.1, and 7.1(if supported). you'll obviously go with 2.1 since you only want your front speakers.
