Ok, so all of this stuff seems to make little sense to me.
Are BD 1.1, BD + and BD-J the same, or different? and does anyone know conclusively whether the Panny BD10a supports/will support through firmware updates any/all of these formats? When I bought my Panny 10a, there was a notice inside the box explaining how to go to the panasonic.net site and frequently check for updates, since future updates would support these new formats. But it didn't list BD 1.1, only BD-J and BD +. Can anyone make sense of all this rubbish? Thanks. |

BD+ is an enhanced anti-copy/encryption technology which is independant of the other two. BD-J refers to the Java programming environment that implement all the useful bits not done in HW in BD players. BD 1.1 and BD 2.0 refer to the version number of the player's "profile". Most current players are BD 1.0; after October 31st, the additional bits necessary for BD 1.1 conformance (notably, support for PIP, Ethernet connection, and local persistant storage) will be mandatory. I.e., all players released after that date must be at least BD 1.1 compliant (the non HW bits of a players profile are implemented in BD-J). BD 2.0 is much the same, but the amount of local storage is increased and some things optional with BD 1.1 become mandatory. There's a good link somewhere that explains all this in more detail, but I don't have it to hand. :-( HTH |

But the question is, will future Blu-Ray releases require BD 1.1 and BD 2.0 profiles in order to play them?
I don't really care about all the extra crap, Since I've never really used any of it with standard DVD's either. I just want to make sure the movies will still play come october. |

As has been stated, the discs will still work on your player, regardless of what extra features are included. You may not have access to certain features, but the movie itself should play like normal. |
