Default The Last Starfighter Review??

I read this sites review and I have to say it does not match up with the screenshots.....the screencaps look great and the review pretty much says the video is a mess. Is this a case of the reviewer wanting all the grain to be in place and just has it out for DNR?? This other site http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/?p=23272 gave it a 4 out of 5 and said its colors look bold and this sites saying they look drab.My question is has anybody seen it yet and which review do you agree more with? I loved this movie and look forward to picking it up.

HDD gave the picture quality 4 stars
DVD Beaver praised the transfer
High Def Disc News gave the transfer 4 stars
DVD Town gave the PQ an 8 out of 10

Seems to be getting pretty high marks elsewhere. I thought it looked pretty darn good, myself...

all i can say is, look at some of the screenshots (namely referring to the trees) in the review link you posted...as martin commented, they do kind of look like a smudged mess i'll buy it either way because i love the movie and am glad to see it finally arrive on bluray

Trees just look out of focuse to me.. Still doesn't look 4 stars to me though based on his facial details.... I would same some DNR, but I wouldn't expect those trees to be clear regardless.

From the screencaps, the image looks good but it's also evident that a little too much DNR was used.

I understand that some people dont mind grain but to give it a bad score on your opinion of DNR is different. I guess some people will like the new polished vibrant look {like myself} and some will not be happy at all no matter what because DNR was used. For example in the review I posted....the reviewer said that its obvious DNR was used and the trees look smudgy.....but thats not enough to detract from the transfer.....this sites review pretty much ran off of that and went downhill from there.

Can I ask a favor? Can the folks who haven't actually watched this disc, please stop chiming in with opinions on its picture quality? Thanks.

You need to actually watch it, you can't base your opinion on some screenshots you saw on the internet. They are not an accurate representation of the picture in motion. Especially when a lot of sites used compressed JPEGs to illustrate picture quality.

That's definitely a good idea.. AVS certain people cherry pick shots in screen cap threads that don't represent the way a film looks on average. In motion is always the best way to judge a movie.

It didnt detract, it ruined it.

Some of this is opinion, but some of this is fact. Some of the reviewers here have a high degree of post production knowledge. They KNOW (not an opinion) when a transfer is not faithfull to its origional presentation. Some folks may like rediculously boosted contrast and edge enhancement and heavy applications of DNR, but a reviewer is right to mark the score down when the transfer is far from its theatrically exhibited form.

If it doensnt look like it did in the theater, the transfer failed.

WHat about films like Bonnie ANd Clyde or Poltergeist that look much better then they did years ago? I dont see how the DNR ruined the transfer.... It still has detail and the colors and black levels are still great. This is the only site that gave it that low of a score so the reviewers of the other sites have no idea of post production knowledge or do they acknowledge that yes DNR was used but yes the transfer still looks good despite the DNR?

i think that makes good sense. blurays are not meant to be watched as still images, and compressed ones at that

So is this a similar situation to what we had with Gangs of New York? That is the first thing I thought of when I read the PQ portion of the review.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that, not at all. I think Last Starfighter looks darn good on blu-ray.

I have not seen this particular title so I cant comment on it. I do know that we have stellar reviewers here. They know their stuff.

The older movies you mentioned, and lots of others like The Searchers look fantastic on Blu....but not better than they did in the theater. Old movies captured on 35mm are the same (to a great extent) as new movies captured on 35mm.Thats the whole goal for Blu, to achieve (come close) what is possible with 35mm and 65mm and 70mm film. DNR robs detail. A Blu can have good colors and good blacks and still be destroyed by DNR. Look at the movie The Arrival with Martin Sheen. RUINED. Look at his face in 99% of the scenes. No pores, no whiskers, no wrinkles, he looks like a darn wax museum figure. Awefull really. Fabrics, landscapes and architecture will suffer as well.
