Default Calling all Onkyo owners..

I recently bought an Onkyo 706 model receiver and within 3 months it broke. I took it in for warranty repair and just got it back. At first it seemed to be working properly. Ive yet to run the Audessy settings, but while using my X-Box, I decided to try and adjust the rear speaker settings. I got a "not available" message on the receiver. I tried changing the listening mode and got the same message. I double checked the XBOX audio settings and verified it was on DD5.1. All i could get was direct stereo. The receiver display shows only the front mains on. I'm running PCM from the XBOX to the receiver. So I switched to my DirecTV which is HDMI. I tried an HD channel which is Dolby Digital. I try changing listening modes and it cycles through all of them. Despite being in "all channel" mode, the receiver display only shows the front mains on. All speakers are giving off sound, yet the display only shows front mains on. I try switching to DD mode, but it never displays. While watching TV or the XBOX, all the display shows is "HDMI through". As I said, when using XBOX, it wont allow me to change to any listeninig mode or adjust speaker levels. While watching TV, I can change listening modes, but not the speaker levels. To me, its seems like the receiver is still jacked up. Unless of course Ive made an error with some particular setting. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

You can clear all settings to the factory defaults and start from scratch.
With power on , press and hold the VCR-DVR button , them press the power button , the display will say CLEAR. You will lose all settings and will need to redo what you want.

return it to the store you originally bought it at and see what they say. They should give you a new one

My guess is that you are using an optical connection for your audio on your Xbox? If that is the case, optical cables only have the bandwidth to carry 2.0 channels of PCM audio (stereo)so that is all that you will get. In order to get 5.1 PCM audio from your xbox, you must connect with an HDMI cable.

If you already have it connected with an HDMI cable, then you might need to send the unit back. If you don't have any more HDMI slots open, then just change the audio output to regular 5.1 on your xbox.

when using my 360, the receiver never displays pcm. always dd. im using hdmi striaght to the receiver. if your not then you should. in any case, you had the receiver 3 months, and if you feel its not acting like it should, then call onkyo and tell them your unhappy about a new unit breaking within 3 months and the replacement isnt working properly. i would tell them, not ask, to give you a new unit.

Turn off the HDMI passthrough of the audio to the TV. It's in the Onkyo GUI. Also make sure you have it showing surround speakers in your setup. They potentially changed it when they were testing it. Have you re-run Audyssey since getting it back?

Not on this particular site, but there is a good thread all about Audyssey here. If there's an equivalent thread on this site (and I would be surprised if there isn't) I wasn't able to find it.

Fireman's link is good. It's really not that hard at all to run, and will definitely help with your sound quality vs. no calibration.

Glad you got it figured out.

Sorry, I wasnt clear. What I meant was, setting up my receiver. I know how to get Audessy going and whatnot. It just seems that theres fity million different settings withing the receiver itself. I was just wondering if there were a few things I need to go through and set, before running Audessy.

That link is really good, honestly as far as anything you need to do when running Audyssey. However, I'm not sure what you mean as far as things you need to set first. You just need a quiet room and the calibration mic. Make sure you're not really "in" the room when you run it- this can affect the calibration. I usually use the remote from the next room to start it up each time. Take as many measurements as your system will let you. I think it's 3 with the 606 but I could be wrong.

It'll probably set your crossovers wrong- this really isn't what it does. If you have towers or hefty bookshelves, set the crossover at 80hz. Satellites at 120hz. Check the speaker's stats to get a better idea of the range they can handle. Give yourself about a 10-15hz cushion between the low end of the speaker's capabilities and the crossover setting.

As far as your sub, set it with the LPF dial all the way up. Gain at about 50% prior to running Audyssey.
