Arrow Dinner for Schmucks Review Thread (Use Spoiler Tags)

Cast is stacking up nicely:

Quote:
My favorite bearded comedian, Zach Galifianakis, has joined Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and Lucy Punch in “Dinner for Schmucks.” According to Variety, he will play the assistant manager of a mattress store who is dating Carell’s ex-wife. Galifianakis’ starpower seems to rise by the day, as do his roles. More after the jump.

“Dinner with Schmucks” is a remake of the 1998 French film called “The Dinner Game,” written and directed by Francis Veberm. The original film focused on a weekly gathering held by a Paris publisher, where his friends were challenged bring the most worthless guest they can find to dinner. The new version will focus on an “extraordinarily stupid man who possesses the ability to ruin the life of anyone who spends more than a few minutes in his company.” Jay Roach, best known for the “Austin Powers” and “Meet the Parents” series, is set to direct.

Galifianakis is popping up in comedies everywhere lately. Since “The Hangover,” we’ve already seen him in “G-Force,” and he has roles in “Youth in Revolt” (a Michael Cera movie and you can check out its new trailer here) and will star opposite Robert Downey Jr. in “Due Date.” It’s amazing how long Hollywood has been missing out on Galifianakis. I really thought he was going to break out around the turn of the millennium. He was great in 2001’s “Out Cold” and had his own daily VH1 show, “Late World with Zach” in 2002. For some reason, it never happened.

In the years since, he’s cropped up in a bunch of Adult Swim programs, the occasional “Reno 911!” episode, and went dramatic in a small, but great role in “Into the Wild.” I really think he’s the next Steve Carell. Hopefully he’ll get a role that will show his versatility, like “The Office” has done for Carell.

Not too far from 1995's dark comedy The Last Supper. I would guess this one will be more comedy and less dark, but has some potential for social commentary.

Rent The Dinner Game immediately.

The remake will probably be slacker-joked into genericity, but only the French can do French Farce.

Quote:
Paramount Pictures has released the first movie trailer for the Steve Carell/Paul Rudd comedy Dinner for Schmucks. The film, helmed by Jay Roach (the director of the Austin Powers and Meet the Parents films), tells the story of a rising executive who “succeeds” in finding the perfect guest, an IRS employee, for his boss’s monthly event, a so-called “dinner for idiots,” which offers certain advantages to the exec who shows up with the biggest buffoon. Here si the official plot synopsis:

“Dinner for Schmucks” tells the story of Tim (Paul Rudd), a guy on the verge of having it all. The only thing standing between him and total career success is finding the perfect guest to bring to his boss’ annual Dinner for Extraordinary People, an event where the winner of the evening brings the most eccentric character as his guest. Enter Barry (Steve Carell), a guy with a passion for dressing mice up in tiny outfits to recreate great works of art. From Jay Roach, director of “Meet the Parents” and “Meet the Fockers” comes an unforgettable feast about two unlikely friends and one very memorable dinner.

The film is a remake of the french comedy film Le Diner de Cons. The movie co-stars Ron Livingston, Bruce Greenwood, Jemaine Clement, Stephanie Szostak, Jeff Dunham, Rick Overton, and Zach Galifianakis.

Just finished watching Le Diner de Cons (The Dinner Game) in my high school French class. If this remake is anything like it, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I trust Steve Carell in making a good comedy.

It's nowhere near as good as The Last Supper was. And, definitely has no social commentary whatsoever. SALT has more social commentary than Dinner For Schmucks has.

The actual dinner at the end is worth sitting through the first part of the movie. Had a few good laughs throughout, but the dinner scene was great. Not as funny as Get Him To The Greek, but it is right up there. 3/5

I saw this movie twice at advanced screenings. One of them actually about a month before the film came out and one in the beginning of the week. This is by far the funniest film this year. Nonstop laughter. So many memorable scenes and so funny!!! It wasn't just stupid humor, it has actually smart humor! Plenty of well written dialogue that were performed to perfection by the actors. It all works. Great performances all around. Every single character in this film is unique and gives it there all and there performances show. They give an unforgettable performance of comedic genius.

Major props to Steve Carell, the actress who played Darla (not spoiling her great character), Jemaine Clement, Zach Galifianakis (the man who thinks he's a mind reader as Steve Carell's IRS boss was another great performance), and all of the Schmucks at Dinner including the super funny blind swordsman. Don't worry the whole movie isn't about the Dinner, it doesn't take place until the last half of the movie. Also, I have to say a great opening title sequence with a great Beatles song playing in the background.

I love Steve Carell, but this is the best role he has ever played. He gave a fantastic performance and this is the funniest he has ever been! Jemaine Clement plays a narcissistic sex driven artist and it's just pure comedy gold. He's the Aldous Snow from Forgetting Sarah Marshall of this film. I love him in Flight of the Conchords This might be the role that will make him breakout more as a star. Hopefully he will get more starring or supporting roles in movies because of this. I won't spoil anything because that will ruin the many parts of this movie.

The trailers were extremely misleading. This isn't just a dumb movie. This film isn't mean at all. It sends a good message. Find out and be who you really are and the real people who make fun of the people at the Dinner are the real Schmucks. Also, this film were very sympathetic to the people at the Dinner. Also, Paul Rudd was great in his role. This is the type of movie where you talk about it after you see it and discuss all of the funny scenes. I have plenty of favorites. Also, I loved Get Him to the Greek, but I have to say , this was better!

Wow, I haven't laughed this hard in ages. My face actually hurts from laughing. I don't see a lot of movies twice, but I saw this twice because of how much fun I had watching the film. Hopefully this film is a hit like the original was. I already see it was #1 at the box office on Friday, beating Inception.
Please see this movie! From beginning to end, nonstop laughter. A fantastic comedy! This film really delivers. 5/5

Ok would someone who's seen it let me know if it's worth going to the theatre?

A word about what I find funny - I thought DodgeBall and Zoolander were two of the greatest movies ever made. However I didn't find The Hangover as funny as I Love You Man, and I think anything with Seth Rogan or Michael Cera is a steaming pile of crap.

I find Dodgeball and Zoolander as extreamly funny movies, But I think The Hangover is funnier than I Love You Man (though I like them both) and I find Seth Rogen extreamly Funny, and I don't mind Michael Cera.

With that in mind, I saw the previews of it and it's done nothing to me, it doesn't raise a smile from me.

Absolutely Hilarious, I was laughing through the whole thing. To the above poster, if you liked I Love you Man you should enjoy this. I would see it in theaters.

Too bad. The cast for this looks great and I was hoping for more than a straight comedy; we all know this cast is capable of more. I'll definitely rent this at the very least.

Great movie. The intro scene and music was perfect. Great cast with Carell, Rudd, and Galifinakis. It wasn't the movie of the year, but I'm a big fan of these actors and I enjoyed myself. Four stars.

[Show spoiler]Not only does this movie have funny parts, but it has emotional scenes as well. When Barry isn't working, he spends most of his time creating these amazing dioramas using taxidermed dressed-up mice which depict moments from his past, most of them being the time that was spent with him and his wife while they were married. Maybe it's just me, but I thought those scenes were sad, and extremely well done.
