That's a really well-written and well-reasoned piece. I like!
The only caveat here is that most of the mainstream media are based in North America, where the 360 does indeed still outsell the PS3 (whereas the PS3 handily beats the 360 pretty much everywhere else). Of course, with the PS3 Slim, all bets are off - as things stand, by this time next year I would be surprised if the PS3 wasn't outselling the 360 everywhere, including North America. I don't really know why Microsoft decided to dump most of their internal game development studios, but that move is not doing them any favors now, and I suspect it will come back to bite them in the coming years as Sony's internal development houses continue to output titles that the 360 will have no answer for - and can not steal for love of money. |

Very well written article. Like Icemage said, the 360 does still outsell the PS3 in North America, but that stands to change after the price drop. Also, the main thing is that most multiplatform games sell more on the 360, but that could also change in the future if the PS3 gets on a roll sales wise like it should. Either way, it is nice to see someone write about how bad the media is nowadays.

Finally, an article that explains what I've been trying to say the whole time to people. When you just live in the US, you feel MS is really dominating and the press has been feeding off of that.
This doesn't even factor in sales of the 360 as replacement units. Many customers are just buying Arcades and putting their hard drives on them rather than paying the repair fee. During the months the PS3 was outselling the 360 by a good margin, it was all quiet on the media front. I expect that to happen again with the slim and new prices. |

I started reading this story from TimesOnline UK earlier today and stopped in disbelief when I got to this:

I like this article, and I am definitely curious how the numbers will look by the end of the year.
Sony REALLY stepped up its game with "$299"—the same magic number that led to the demise of the Saturn—and it honestly looks like the other camp has absolutely no answer for this bold move. Hell, in the other forum where I post, all but the staunchest/dumbest supporters of the other console are planning to pick up the Slim. It's the same story at work. |

For the past two generations, I find myself to be favoring the "underdog". Sales figures don't mean a thing. Truthfully, I could care less about sales numbers, but these "reporters" need to pull their heads out of their asses and do some frickin' research. It's all about the games, not the sales figures.
The other day, a guy I work with was telling me that the 360 has a 75% fail rate. I wonder how many 360 owners are repeat customers being forced to buy a second console because the first one broke. |

We'll see if lower prices help PS3 sales or else the exodus of Activision may have the same effect as the Warner Bros. exodus from HD DVD.

As a professional writer and author myself, I know a lot of journalists who either make up their own data, or get it from the first 2-3 results on Google. The Internet makes writers lazy. Very little fact-checking is done, and, not surprisingly, a lot of fact-checkers don't make phone calls anymore--they Google it. It's a vicious circle of ineptitude. But... I find if you approach the writer with constructive commentary, and are very discreet and tactful, they listen more times than not. Now, all that said, I enjoyed the "Myth" article. I find it to be very informative. However, the writer makes no mention of the fact that there are some PS3 owners who aren't gamers at all--they bought the console for its Blu-ray capabilities. Unfortunately, there's no data, TMK, on what the % of non-gamer PS3 owners happens to be, so all anyone can do is speculate. But this might explain the writer's correct observation that the Xbox 360 seems to have more "fans" amongst gaming consumers. Last edited by Sylin; 08-25-2009 at 10:06 AM. |
