I have a question for everyone. Is it better to have the noise reduction features off or on? I see no difference of pic quality when its on so should I just set it to off? What does the Noise Reduction features on our tv's do anyway?
Anyone with any thoughts and suggestions let me know. Thanks |

The main thing it does is blur the image to reduce the appearance of film grain or digital noise. If your one of the people like me that are fine with seeing grain then leave it on. If you hate grain and no one can convince you otherwisre then turn it on.

Absolutely. Noise reduction smoothes the picture and in some cases it enhances edges to compensate for the smearing affect caused by noise reduction. There is no way to reduce noise without compromising picture details (provided the picture is good quality, i.e. rich in details). However, this may give some improvement, if the picture is lacking details and full of noise.

Agreed. I've read numerous opinions out there about how noise reduction is evil, but my untrained eyes couldn't notice a difference. It certainly didn't help with 300 or The Wrestler.

Well.. I think it is better if NR is off rather than on if no difference can be seen, Then it can be checked and switched on if any improvement can be seen in a noisy picture. That is the way I would handle it.

The affect of NR on your TV set really depend on the implementation and how aggressive it is on the picture. In some cases it could be subtle but in some other implementations could be aggressive.
