Default trying to play MKV on my laptop connected to PS3....help?

So I have a cable connecting my laptop to the PS3.

I have an MKV file which will not play on the PS3 (won't even show up on the HD) but I want to play it via VLC player on my laptop, and have it show up on the monitor my PS3 is hooked to.

However the VLC player opens up but a small box reading "INPUT NOT SUPPORTED" is shown.

The video file plays on my laptop, but it won't show up on the PS3.

Do I need another program to play it? Windows Media Player perhaps?

Why dont you just hook the laptop directly to the tv? The only other thing that may work is streaming with PS3 Media Server or something like that..

My Laptop IS directly connected.

I have a 24" Acer HDTV 1080P monitor that I have connected with my PS3. I don't have an actual TELEVISION perse, just the monitor that I use

I have it connected with my laptop using this cable I just got, and I can see everything on there.

But any video I play (in VLC player, Zoom Player, Windows Media Player) it will show the video on my laptop, but it doesn't play on the PS3.

I'll try the media sharing thing and if that doesn't work, I dunno.

YOUTUBE videos will play though.

I guess I just dont understand how you have it connected with the ps3...

why do you need the ps3 to play a video from your laptop on the monitor? You should be able to just hook the laptop directly to the monitor.. If you can explain how exactly you have everything hooked up that may help.

THAT IS HOW I HAVE IT HOOKED UP! lol

I have a cable going from the back of my laptop to the back of the MONITOR.

So I can see everything via the Monitor.

Perhaps I wasn't clear with that before, my apologies.

EDIT: looking back yeah I totally screwed that up. lol

I see, what does the ps3 have to do with this? Sorry just trying to clear things up...

You may need to check the settings on the laptop and make sure its set to clone. A side note: The ps3 will not natively play an MKV file, you would need to convert it to mpeg2.. Google mkv2vob converter....

you need to read more then. lol

I said I can see the stuff on my laptop on the big monitor I have it hooked to.

However it won't play ANY videos through players like Windows Media Player/VLC player/etc. On my laptop I can see the video playing. On the Monitor, it shows the player but in the middle of the screen there it has a blue box that says "input not supported"

I've already said this. lol

what resolution do you have the laptop outputting as? try adjusting to a resolution supported by your monitor.

also, how are you connected to the monitor? VGA, DVI, HDMI?

When I have the laptop connected to the monitor, I can see everything that I can see on my laptop, on the monitor.

If I'm surfing the net on my laptop, it shows all that on the monitor.

However, when I click to start a video file on my laptop, it shows everything I'm doing on the monitor, only the actual video will not play on the monitor.

When I look @ the laptop, it shows it playing the movie.

When I look @ the monitor, it shows the media player, but inside the window where the movie is playing (on the laptop) it just shows a blue box that says "input not supported"

and it's connected via VGA (I believe).

I am connecting this via the blue monitor plug thing in the back of the monitor, and same on the laptop.

Just get PS3 Media Server and you can play anything you laptop can play but all on the PS3/TV screen.. Don't even have to hook up the PC to the PS3.
