Default Need help badly.

Ok, so the more reading I do the more confused I'm getting Basically I'm looking for a 58" (or 60") plasma with hdmi 1.3 (which I'm sure most have at this point) and hopefully THX. I'm in Canada so store selection is limited and prices are high. Would love to get the Pany 58" V10 but it's too expensive.

The models I'm currently interested in are....

Panasonic 58" - TH58PZ800 $3499.99
Panasonic 58" VIERA -TCP58S1 $3199.99
LG 60" - 60PS60 $2499.99
Samsung 58" - PN58B850 $3499.99

I'm sure I can get a few hundred off those prices. I'm also aware of the issues the LG's have but it's hard to beat that price.

Any other suggestions would be welcome. I would also consider an LCD.

Thanks

Thanks anyways

I guess I'd like to know if there really is a big difference in PQ between those models. After looking around I"m also considering the 54" V10 but it's close in price to the Pany 58" S1.

Looks like the best selection is at 2001 Audio/Video, at least from what I can find online. I'm not a native Torontonian so I haven't found the best places to buy tv's from aside from the usual big box stores unfortunately.

It wasn't really in our price range at the time, so I looked at the G10 model. After comparing the 2 (they were not side-by-side and had to walk to the other side of the store to the other), I couldn't tell a difference between the two. The guy mentioned that Black and White movies look better on that one, but I could tell.

Is there anything that I should be looking for specifically in comparisons or something?

as far as I've seen, the big box stores around here often do have the most competitive pricing... Just be sure to negotiate no matter what. You'll often at least get a stand/blu ray player/etc if you bargain a bit

That was your first mistake right there Mike.

...The way they are displayed in the store is not how it will look at home.

I would bet, those TV's in store are not even connected with an HDMI cable. And definitely not even calibrated.

Plasmas are one of those things where it will blow you away once its in your living room.

its true... they are rarely calibrated in big box stores, and sometimes arent even hooked up via HDMI!

honestly, thats a tough answer. You might be able to find a proper viewing environment and calibrated tv at bestbuys magnolia section...but I wouldnt hold my breath.

The way I do it...is I read every review out there. I find one that does what I want and then some. Then I try to find the cheapest place selling them. The only time I would go to the store is to view what the bezel looks like. I guess I try to put faith in all the reviewers.

But I'll tell ya...I love my [last years] 720p Panasonic. Can't imagine the new models @ 1080p.

Funny, I thought I was the only one that did that. There are so many variables as to how TV's are set up in stores. Other than the physical properties of the set I really pay no attention to the picture. I have never been disappointed by any of my purchases using that method.

BB is then "worst" possible place to evaluate a HDTV. Their selection is usually set in TORCH mode to impress the uninformed masses. Goto a specialty AV store & check out Plasma & LCD HDTVs that are properly set up for viewing. It is usually not "nice" to take the time of a specialty AV store salesperson & not buy from that person. But if cash short, go back to BB if you must & buy the same HDTV you checked out in the specialty AV store.

Personally I when I decided buy to a Flat Panel HDTV I thought that I would be buying a 40 inch Sony LCD. I went to my local specialty AV store started to view the Sony 40 inch set. The salesman suggested that I take a look at a Plasma HDTV. It was a Pioneer 5020. I spent the next 5 hours viewing that Pioneer. At the end of that time my mind was changed & made up. I was going to buy a Pioneer Plasma. At 1st I thought it was going to be the 5020, but after some research I decided to go for the Gold Standard & buy an Elite 111FD. It would take 5 months of heavy saving & some sacrifice, but by the time of Pioneer's announcement about building Plasmas, I had the $$$$ to make my purchase to avoid any "inventory" problems. When I started saving for the 111FD it cost $5000. When I bought it the price was $2999. It would have been worth EVERY penny at $5000, but was a STEAL at $2999. I subsequently had it professionally calibrated after the "break in" period. The PQ is STUNNING"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can barely tear my eyes away from it.

"Brighter" DOES NOT equal "Better"!!! Don't be fooled by the BB practice of using "Torch Mode" to sell HDTVs!

You must have been a lucky person when buying a HDTV other than a Pioneer Elite.

Thanks blu_world, unfortunately Visions is only in Western Canada. And yes, we get royally screwed here as far as prices go.

If you look at the G10/G15 or V10, you can set it in THX mode. It's probably a little darker than you'd watch it at home but should give you a good indication of color, motion and quality overall.
