Default PS3 Audio Settings

I have a basic question, in order to get DTS-HD or Dolby True HD do I need to switch from Bitstream to Linear PCM on my PS3 and then back when the track is something different?

Thanks for any help.

No, if it not the PS3 slim, keep it set to LPCM. Just let the PS3 do all of your decoding.

If you have the new PS3 slim, then set it to bitstream if your receiver is capable of decoding the HD audio codecs.

Thanks for the response. I was told to keep it on Bitstream and my receiver would decode but the Dolby HD light and DTS-HD light never come on on the face of the receiver.

Whcih PS3 do you have? The new Slim is the only one that can bitstream the HD codecs.

From looking at OPs HT pics, it's the older style PS3.
It will not decode or pass the HD audio to your receiver if Bitstream is selected. You'll need to set it to LPCM and let the PS3 decode it then pass it on. That's the only way you'll get HD audio, Enjoy!

Edit: And if your Onkyo is like mine, it will say something like "Multi-Channel" due to the fact that the PS3 is decoding and just passing the audio on to the Onkyo.

I don't have a new slim PS3, I have one of the older ones (Less than a year). I will switch the setting when I get home later and see what happens. I know for a fact it is on bitstream right now.

Thanks

Linear PCM is better than bitstreaming. Its addition to the PS3 slim makes for better versatility but Linear PCM makes for better quality. The only real reason why someone would opt for bitstream is because they're obsessively picky and require that their receiver's display reads "DTS-HD Master Audio" or "Dolby TrueHD".

While I'll agree that Linear PCM makes for better versatility, since that way you can get the secondary/PiP audio working, I completely disagree that the quality is any better or worse having the player decode it as opposed to the receiver. Not sure where you're getting that information. I know that PeterTHX has stated more than once that there's a nominal and indiscernible difference between being decoded in player or receiver.

I guess at the end of the day I want to ensure I am getting the proper sound I am choosing. I believe my receiver as a setting for each output of what I would like it to decode in.

I will change from bitstream and see if I can tell a difference.

Oh you'll hear a difference when it's set right. On most titles I can tell within a few seconds what kind of track it's using.

Maybe "quality" was misused. I would agree that their quality is equal when pitting one sound via Linear PCM vs the same sound via Bitstream. Though the edge goes to Linear PCM because it's my understanding there are some "player" sounds lost when decoded by the receiver. Examples: under certain circumstances sounds in a Blu-ray's interactive menu may be inaudible; I think you already touched on one with PiP.
