Default (Japan) lack of preparation made the new PS3 launch only decent for some retailers

Sony Japan failed to make a lot of buzz about PS3 Slim launch because for some retailers it was okay and a bit disappointed by the commercials and the line in front of the shop.

Three major minuses:

1. Lack of preparation
2. Lack of recognition of the name
3. Never release on a full weekday

I fully agree with Inakoshi.

I admit I'm kindof suprised by this as well.

Aside from the obvious coverage by specialized magazines and website, I was expecting Sony to gear up for a quasi re-launch, and put the new price everywhere.

Seems I was wrong, and it's being as quiet as possible ... (until the start of the holiday period I guess).

Seems like a missed opportunity to me, even though they will probably do some very decent sales worldwide.

No TV Adds, no flyers with big advertising of the new price -ahead- of release, I've seen nothing (and if there was anything out, it must have been failry discreet).

In fact, the only ad I've seen recently for the PS3 was for Arkham Asylum, which was well played. But that's -1- TV add I've seen (on FX) in months.

Yup. I saw that TV AD, twice now. No mention about the price drop anywhere. Really sad.

I think Sony is expecting this to be a word of mouth kind of thing. They really need to take a look into their advertising department.

+1

Look at all the buzz on forums about this. It is safe to say that the majority of gamers are already aware of this.

I've seen the new "price drop" commercial several times on TV, and I've heard the commercial on the radio a few times.

Here's the TV commercial:

Let us be honest, Sony has handled the marketing for the PS3 since inception very poorly. Outside of the hype they generated before launch, it has been disappointment after disappointment. I would question the competency of the marketing department at this point.

Sony had mishandled the release of the original 60 GB PS3 and continues to do so. I think they should fire those from the Marketing Dept. since they haven't really been that efficient to begin with.

I wonder if they even have marketing departments for places other than Japan.

I liked this commercial promoting the PS3's Blu-Ray capabilities:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrpfxvQKp_M

Now for the holiday season, do a similar commercial except show the big hits coming this holiday season - Lord Of The Rings, Transformers 2, Up, The Hangover, Star Trek, District 9, etc.

I don't understand the dislike of Sony's marketting this gen honestly.

Yes, they've had some really weird commercials, but they are not alone in that at all...the Microsoft half-head freaks me out to this day.

No, the commercials didn't convince people to buy PS3s, but with a 600$ price tag there was no such thing as a commercial that was going to sell PS3s.

And on top of all of that, they've had some pretty cool commercials too...but those get ignored because they don't fit into the preconception that they have bad commercials.

I've not too sure the dislike of the Sony marketing is because of the content in the commercials, but more lackthereof.

I see as many PS3 commercials as I do 360 commercials, and more than I see Wii commercials. /shrug.

Admittedly I live in a big city, so perhaps Sony only really pays for the commercials in large metropolitan areas.

I live in Phoenix, 6th largest city in the US (or that's what I've been told).

I had Cox, and just switched to DirecTV. I generally mostly watch channels and shows with the demo that the PS3 would be interested in (well off young adults & adults, male): Spike, FX, SyFy, USA, Fox, NBC, Comedy Central, etc.
MS has been advertising their C..p all over the place (and now I'm starting to see Halo ODST commercials. Good god), but almost no trace of PS3 commercials -ever-.
The PS3 commercials for the Slim/ price reduction have been inexistant in my viewing time.
I was driving near a GameCrazy shop, and on my way back home I quickly looked at a Gamestop. No poster or signs about the Slim. Etc.

It's not that Sony has a bad product (the PS3 is fantastic), or bad commercials (well, they had a few really bad ones back in the days. The crying baby comes to mind ) ... it's just that they need to frakin' communicate !

It's all over SyFy channel during Warehouse 13 and Eureka. I've seen the $299 commercial with the dude in the glasses (playing the nerd).

Reading a fair bit of that site and it seems a bit of a FUD site. Anyway the predictions from respected outlets in Japan for sales of the Ps3 this week are 100,000+.

The PS3 is being heavily advertised in both the US and Europe you people havent a clue and are yet again basing you're opinions on mythos.
