Japan PS3 launch numbers: 88,400 sold

If I read this right, it says that Sony shipped 100,000 units but I'm not sure how rock solid that is. That's old information.

Enterbrain said that Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight, both from Namco Bandai Holdings, were the top two selling games at about 30,000 units each.

Of the total sold so far in Japan, Enterbrain said 54,600, or about 62 percent, were of the more advanced model.

I would suspect the remaining 12,000 PS3's are probably in kiosks and other things of that nature.

It's just like when MSFT promised 400k at launch but only delivered around 360-370k.

Typical and no big deal.


And how are HD-DVD and the Xbox platform doing in the East again?

This is all within what? 2-3 days?

All as expected and more to come. And it launches in the West in less than a week.

U.S. launch is less than 4 days away given that fact that many retailers are going to be doing midnight launches. Then imagine how many potential BD players there are going to be.

BD movies are going to be in people faces, at least at BBY... People will buy them whether HD-DVD fanboys want to admit it or not, and guess what? They will like the BD movies and be back for more.

So a 100,000 units per week to be made available to Japan? I think Microsoft gets an A for effort for good at trying to break in there but the 360 is still not it.

My manager friend at my local EB says he expects to receive his PS3 allotment a day or two before street, which he says is normal routine for these consoles.

I only halfway joked with him when I asked: Are you going to hire some armed security to spend the night in the store until those things are gone?

Does he know if he is getting the full supply of units needed for the preorders they took? And do you know if this is true for all stores?

Barring unforseen and uncontrollable factors (shipping error, acts of God, etc.), yes.

Typically, yes.

Obviously, I have no idea what's going on all around the country, but more or less this is how these console launches usually work and even a lot of games.

He took delivery of RAW vs. Smackdown 2007 last week, for example, but he can't release it until street date tomorrow.

These kinds of things happen all the time. I wish if stuff shipped like that it could just be sold right away.


The stores take delivery sometime before actual street date, sometimes up to several days.

Any number of varying, random factors come into play after that.

They cannot and will not break street date no matter what, for any reason, so don't get yourself worked up.

88,400 PS3's Sold In Two Days During Japanese Launch

Sony sold 88,400 PlayStation 3 consoles over the weekend in Japan according to Japanese magazine company Enterbrain, which publishes Famitsu. The number falls around halfway between the 100,000 launch-unit target Sony was aiming for and the 80,000 figure reported in the Nikkei Shimbun prior to launch.

The best selling games were Namco Bandai's Ridge Racer 7 and Gundam: Target in Sight, both of which sold around 30,000 units. The near-instant total depletion of hardware stock has led to a huge number of Internet auctions for so-called "used" PS3 consoles spring up, some with asking prices more than twice that charged by retail.

It's a trend that's even being felt in Europe. Some web-based importers have decided not to sell the console to clients in the European Union after Sony enjoyed success in its attempts to stifle Hong Kong-based Lik-Sang, which went out of business recently.

But one London-based importer is known to be offering the console, along with its five launch titles, for GBP 1500.

Reuters documents the Japanese PS3 frenzy, saying that the console sold nearly all of its stock -- 88,400 units -- in its first two days. Just over 60 percent moved were the 60GB version, but we expect gamers were just buying whatever was available.

But what games do the Japanese players want? Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight and Ridge Racer 7 are the hottest titles, selling about 30,000 each. While other launch titles are picking up the slack, it sounds like Japanese gamers are spending most of their money on the console and not on games.

The PS3 already supports video downloads in Japan, so that audience may see it as a rounded entertainment system -- or a Blu-ray player. We're interested in how the number of games sold per-console averages out in different parts of the world.

Sony started selling the latest version of its blockbuster game console in Japan on Saturday, and all indications point to a strong start. Sony plans to have the PS3 on shelves in North America on November 17, followed by a European launch in March.

According to Enterbrain, Sony sold 88,400 units combined on Saturday and Sunday, depleting stocks at most electronics retailers that were able to get their hands on a limited supply of the console.

Sony was able to ship only 100,000 units for the launch after a glitch in blue laser diode production disrupted its output plans.

An official at Enterbrain said the sales figure could be interpreted as a promising start for the PS3, with thousands of game fans queuing for hours at electronics stores in Tokyo over the weekend to be among the first to play PS3 games.

The PS3 is up against Microsoft Corp.'s
Xbox 360, which has been on sale for the past year, and Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s upcoming Wii game console, which is scheduled to go on sale on November 19 in the United States and December 2 in Japan.

In case they missed their 100k target by around 20k units, remember that they can always bite back on the lack and release more. (starting next week).

I believe the 5 million target for fiscal year 2007 is possible. 6 million unit target is possible ONLY if Sony increases production ASAP.

The way I see it:

Japan,alone, can purchase around a total of 1 million PS3s up until December 31 (assuming 100k units a week average with increase to 125k per week starting first week of Dec.)

Thing is, I don't know about the US sales numbers and allocations.

Hopefully, if all the 400k units get sold out on or before the end of November, I just hope that 600k units would be sent for the December leg.

Wishful thinking but I hope it comes true.

Oh yeah! This is more than the whole HD DVD population!!!

Especially in the East. HD-DVD is pretty much DOA there just like the Xbox platform has been since day one.
