Default Latest PS3 Shipped And Sold Numbers

QUOTE
“A total of 5.5 million PlayStation 3 consoles were shipped between the November launch and the end of March. That's below Sony's target of 6 million. The company cited production delays that have now been fixed.”

“The shipment numbers count consoles as they leave Sony's factories and include those in warehouses and en route to retailers. The number of consoles sold to retailers stood at around 3.6 million, said Oneda.”

Microsoft shipped 10.5 million Xbox 360 by the end of 2006.

The current count of Xbox 360 sold to consumers as of now, according to www.vgchartz.org, is 9.71 million.

I think, looking at the Sony loss, that Sony has shipped and sold as many PS/3 as they can afford to. They have to play a PR game between sales numbers and realities of cash flow.

Shareholders would rightly masacre management if they flooded the channels with expensive to produce boxes, instead of keeping it filled just enough to handle demand, allowing the cost reductions to always be to their maximum benefit.

Microsoft had the year head start to their sales lead. And honestly, a large portion of people buying these consoles don't have an hdtv yet, so that would slow sales of the PS3 with the added cost of the blu-ray player.

But the PS3 will still be fine. There have been talks that FFXIII may not be an exclusive, but there has been no actual indication yet that those are the definite plans.

Just wait until MSG4, FFXIII (which looks like it'll miss the holiday season, released in 2008) and God of War 3 later down the road. The PS3 will sell, but it needs the games first. The PS2 sold what, 100 million consoles? And it's still the number 1 selling console! The next gen console sales still has years ahead.

When did the 360 start shipping? In other words, how many months of sales does the 10.5MM represent?

360 had a holiday all to themselves and then reaped the benefits of PS3 and Wii shortages....

PS3's have been selling a little better the past 2 months and I wonder if the numbers here reflect that?...

for a little bit, PS3's were collecting dust and then out of nowhere, people are buying them now...

OK so let's do the math. 360 claims 10.5MM shipped from 11/05 - 12/06 or 14 months. PS3 claims 5.5MM from 11/06 - 3/07 or 5 months. Also 360 has 2 holiday seasons in there as opposed to one. Simple math suggests that PS3 has a stronger run rate (5.5 X 14/5 = 15.4MM... versus 10.5MM).

There will be several version of FFXIII (for mobile phones, 360, and PS3). They are all suppose be different.

PS3 is short on game titles.

Once the good games come out, it will sell more...

Yeah, I just looked at the available games today. There is nothing new I wanted. I think Sony's strategy is to make people starve on games so they will buy BDs. dunno...

It helps that the PS/3 is actually selling in Japan.

The XBox 360, somehow, is doing worse than the original Xbox at this point after release!

Hmmm, I am not a gamer but this sounds like the same problem that HD DVD has with movie content. Are there far many more games created for the XBox compared to PS3 or does Sony have the content but the games are coming out slowly because the console is still fairly new? Is there are reason to be concerned?

The original Xbox's clear hardware spec advantage was far more appealing than Xbox 360's online robustness advantage. I strongly believe that's why the 360 is less successful.

It's not doing tremendous sales in Japan, just about 9K units the latest week (that's a new low).

That's a fairly huge number of units that Sony has to warehouse (2 Million).

Not really versions, per se, and nothing for the 360 announced yet.

FFXIII (the main one - no subtitle) on PS3.
FFXIII Versus (a more action-oriented title, we think) also on PS3.
FFXIII Agito (don't know much about this one) on Cell phones.

All will be in the same universe but completely separate.

I think the biggest thing is the XBOX has a lot of development tools to help game companies with new releases. All I hear about Sony is it is hard to program. I think this is mostly because of a lack of tools. I read this elsewhere but the logic makes sense.

This game was delayed but is finally making it to the shelves this month.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas - Due on May 22.

From what I understand, Sony has made great strides in dev kits. I think most of the "hard to program" talk is just stuff still floating around from last year's E3.
