It came out around the same time "Armageddon" did. I enjoy "Deep Impact" more because it's a sturdier sci-fi. "Armageddon" was way too cheesy for me. "Deep Impact" takes a more scientific look at the end of the world via a giant meteor.

I recommend a rental, though.

What's odd is that Deep Impact seems far more farfetched than Armageddon... and Armageddon is about a bunch of oil drillers being hired to destroy an asteroid in space...

I think the problem with Deep Impact is that they didn't have NASA's support IMO. Or the miliatary... So basically, we have the Tea Leoni stuff, which is excelent. The Morgan Freeman stuff which is excelent. But then we have the Space Stuff being cheesy, Leelee Sobieski and Elijah Wood being unbelievable, and the score featuring a lesser used theme from Titanic.

I'd say it's about a 6/10. So it's worth a rental. You might like it. I didn't dislike it. Like I said, there are elements that are great, and then some stuff that's really not so great.

That would never ever happen! You should check out all the talk in the thread for The New World. Fun stuff in there if you like Horner.

I did really enjoy one cue from Deep Impact though, Drawing Straws. I felt it really captured the chaos of that part of the movie... until the Elijah Wood/Leelee Sobieski part started back up.

On a side note, I had to look up the name of the track because I couldn't remember if it's "Short Straw" or "Drawing Straws." Turns out "Short Straw" is from Armageddon.

I personally wouldn't buy it. It's a good one-timer, maybe twice if it's on TV at some point. But it's not a particularly strong film, and it definitely would collect dust on my shelf.

I thought it was a pretty good movie, but I prefer Armageddon. I recommend you rent it before you buy it.

Highly recommended. I loved the movie, and so far it's one of the best disaster movies ever since Godzilla (1954 version) and I Am Legend.

That is a pretty good analysis there.

The comet landing made the asteroid landing in Armageddon look pure Arthur C Clark by comparison...

That said, I like both movies a lot and will definitely get this on blu ray.

The one time I saw it was more than enough for me. I wont lose any sleep if I never see it again. It is not in the same league as Armageddon as that is an amazing movie.

First day buy for me. With the exception of Frodo out running a tidal wave on a trail bike its solid sci fi with excellent performances. As for Armageddon, I wouldnt pick it up if it was laying on the sidewalk.

Armageddon also has a lot more humor compared with DI....ya DI does have a more "scientific" feel but Armageddon is a lot more fun!

Personally speaking I really enjoy "Deep Impact" and watch it whenever it is on TV. There was a high definition broadcast a while back on HDNet Movies (I think that was the channel) which shows commercial-free HD movies (sometimes before they are even in the movie theater). I thought the HD broadcast was a good one and hopefully the Blu-ray uses that master.

I find "Deep Impact" a lot more entertaining than the more heavy-handed "Armageddon" and having been a part of the Washington D.C. press the whole build-up is more interesting. Morgan Freeman is simply superb as the president and (before she was in almost everything) the movie features a surprisingly strong performance from Leelee Sobieski.

I'm glad that (according to DVDBeaver) that all of the special features from the "Deep Impact (Special Collector's Edition)" DVD have been ported over for the Blu-ray release but I would still recommend giving it a rental first.
