Default Fixing Burn-in on Plasmas? can it be done?

Is there anyway to get rid of burn in on a plasma monitor? i had read somewhere to turn it on the blue screen and leave it on for a day or two because the blue color is the brightest on a plasma and can sometimes fix burn in. Is this true? the Plasma i just picked up for cheap has a small amount of burn in.

What you're seeing is image rentention. It'll go away eventually. Just watch some full screen content.

Not sure about the blue screen thing, but I wouldn't do it. The break-in disc rotates evenly through the red, blue, green, black, etc. colors specifically to equalize use of the colors until the phosphors aren't quite so strong. From what I understand, a new set is more prone to burn-in or image retention (which is what is usually is...not burn-in) when the phosphors are at their newest (strongest).

You don't know that.

The OP said he bought it used like this (for cheap), which means the seller probably knew they had a problem and just wanted to be rid of the set. Older models (particularly LG, Samsung, Vizio, etc) would get true burn-in if "abused" (watch a lot of one channel with a logo, play a lot of games with stationary HUDs, watch a lot of 4:3 content, etc without 'wiping' the screen with other content). Normally, I would say the same thing: watch full-screen for awhile and it should go away. I don't think that's going to help in this case, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.

edit: Just saw it was a WM hanging monitor. Probably had static images on it for months-on-end. Doubt anything you do will get rid of this.

I know most people think any image retention is burn-in.

Blaze, what is the specific problem? Is it from black bars or a icon or what?

If you only see it on a black screen or blank input, it's image retention. Don't worry, it'll go away over time and since it doesn't intrude on the image when something is on screen, not much to worry about. Try turning up the brightness and contrast settings very high on Vivid or something similar and playing some full screen content for a few hours. This will help.

yeah on a blank screen when i turn it on is when i see it. you can barely see it on the screen when there is something on the screen.

While I agree that if you can't obviously see it when watching normal programing, then I wouldn't worry about it, but your comment regarding if you can only see the image on a blank screen means it is IR is simply not true. It may only be bad IR, but chances are (based on the previous use of the set) that this is true burn-in (though minor). Burn-in and IR will both show-up the most on a dark screen. The only difference between the two is one goes away and the other doesn't.

Regardless, if you don't notice it during normal viewing, then don't worry about it.

Default Fixing burn in on Plasma *Update

ok, so i got the tv installed tonight and was useing the ps3 on it and its looking really good, i had to pause the movie , so i hit the triangle button on the ps3 controler, and brought up the menu that has abunch of icons on the screen left it on there for about 5 minutes. unpaused the movie and let it play for another 5 minutes, then i shut the playstation 3 down. the Tv was still on and i could see the faint outlines of the menu on from the ps3 when i paused it... how long does it take to burn in an image and after a tv has alot of time on it, will it burn in a image even faster?

Why are you leaving this paused for 5 minutes? Hit stop. Or pause and change the input to cable so that you're not leaving a static image on screen. Also, turn down your settings when watching a movie. Use "cinema" or the equivilent on your plasma. What do you have your plasma set on as far as brightness and contrast go?

i just got it set up in my garage, i dont have everying in there yet like the remote and just paused it for a moment. 5 minutes should not cause some sort of imprint like that should it? and this does not have any manual or anything and its my first plasma so i have no idea what type of settings your talking about. can you give me a little more info on what i need to be changeing? i appreciate all the help. but next time i will just stop the movie.

I wouldn't take the chance if I were you. 5 minutes doesn't seem like a long time under normal circumstances. But sounds like your particular set is vulnerable to IR anyway. When I pause my tv for any reason there is a picture off function on my remote that I use. Don't know if you have that. Do you know the model # for your tv? I'd start with that and do some research and see if others have this same issue with the tv. If you have the model # you can always see if you can get an online manual from your manufacturers website.

Under the picture settings where you adjust the color, contrast, etc. use the "movie" or "cinema" or the equivalent settings and adjust to your liking. Modes like Vivid or Standard usually don't recreate an accurate image on plasma or any television for that matter.

It doesn't seem like it'd be to carry the remote in the room? Or y'know, use the buttons on the television itself? It's not wise to leave a plasma that already seems prone to IR on pause for more than a few seconds.
