Did they change the packaging for Close Encounters? - Blu-ray Forum

I was going through someone's photos in the community section and I happen to come across his shelf that had a part of his collection. As I looked through I noticed that he had Close Encounters of the Third Kind but...it was the size of a regular blu. It wasn't the thick case that it was originally released in.

Did they change the packaging for the movie? If so when did this happen? I know that they also slimmed down the Blade Runner set as well but this too?

I believe the thick case you speak of was just a sleeve. Amazon is still selling it with it, so I don't think anything changed. http://www.amazon.com/Close-Encounte...3190271&sr=8-1

This seems to be the same one that I purchased months ago. Just checked. The standard blue plastic case is inside the thick slip case.

My Close Encounters set is a digibook w/booklet and poster tucked inside a thick cardboard box.

I know the UK got a standard blue case release. Were you looking at UK member's collection?

It has a poster as well as a thick booklet.

I wish mine was like that, mine was a digipak with a book and poster inside a thick carboard slip cover, it takes up more shelf space then i'd like

I would have prefered a standard plastic keep case

What is the quality of the movie?
This is my fave movie and I wondered about buying a blue ray disk of it.

You should pretty much be solid on buying your favorite movie on blu no matter what. That said, it's got excellent reviews as a very comprehensive edition of the film.

You will never see a better edition of this movie on Blu-ray. Sony blew out the bank on this set and it should be a part of anyone's BD collection. My highest recommendation for a Blu-ray.

Sorry to rebump this, but is the uk packaging different from the us? I'm interested in purchasing the movie, but trying to decide between the original release and the Essentials rerelease, Kind of not excited about it being dvd sized packaging.

The original Blu-ray release was a special collector's edition that came with a book, I believe ... it was a bulky release. The newer release is just your standard Blu-ray release. Unfortunately, I haven't found a single local retailer who is carrying this. The only way you can buy it is by ordering it online.
