Default Rented Blu-Ray's showing up in letterbox?

I recently made the blu-ray transition and I'm noticing that blu-ray's I rent are showing up in letterbox format, but one's that I have purchased are showing up full screen. I wonder if this could be some setting, or I'm just renting the wrong movies?

Anybody have an answer?

Oh, BDP-360 going to an XBR9

Just a coincidence in the movies you're renting, I'm guessing.

But I'm renting new flicks, I would just assume they would be in full-screen. Gran Torino, Little Miss Sunshine and movies that I have purchased Goodfellas, Ghostbusters, The Shining are all full-screen. I assumed it was a coincidence, but just checking.

Age doesn't matter. Aspect ratio is the decision of the director. Gran Torino and Little Miss Sunshine should actually be showing black bars on the top and bottom. The others you listed are 1.85 and won't show any black bars, or they'll be very small depending on the amount of overscan on your set, if any.

I see what you're saying, thank you for answering my question without making me feel like a moron.

So the 2.55, which is what Gran Torino is shot in is why it is showing letterbox.

Exactly. Anything greater than 1.85:1 will show black bars.
