Default The Shining Question???

OK just watched this and loved it but the end confused the hell out of me. What was up with that picture at the end from 1924?? Does it mean Jack Nicholsan was a ghost the whole time????

It's really up to what you think. I believe he was there in another life. He kept saying that it's as if he he's already been there.

This is what I have always thought. Sort of a reincarnated type thing.

I'm going with the reincarnation theory. Jack says something along the lines of the place looking familiar or if it feels like he's been there before. And that "you've always been the caretaker" line, as well. All signs point to it.

only problem with the reincarnation theory is that, even if he was a reincarnation of the former guy, all that means is he may have his memories/thoughts/etc, but that still wouldnt change the physical ink on the physical picture in the hotel wall. unless of course, he was a clone reincarnation.

i haven't read the links posted in this thread, but on the audio commentary of the blu-ray, i thought i heard something about how, upon dying in the maze, jack would have become "absorbed" into the hotel grounds. this "absorption" may have caused the photo to change. then jack may become one of the roaming ghosts of the hotel. we already know that there are real (not imaginary) ghosts in the hotel, capable of actual physical acts, as one physically unlocked the freezer door for jack.

I agree with this take as well. I never thought about it much. I just took it as saying that Jack was finally home where he belonged.

This film is a masterpiece in direction, sound design and acting, by the way.

I always took it to mean that he had become a part of the hotel by the end and the picture signifyed his acceptance by the other spirits as part of the hotel.

But really, it depends on the viewer. Nothing's concrete and you could look at the film as if they're all just hallucinating and there aren't actually any ghosts if you want.

I read in that link, that on Jack's desk there was a 1999 New Year's Eve photo of them at the hotel with Jack in it, but it was cut from the final film. Don't know why, but when I read that I got a chill down my spine and I don't even know if it was actually a cut picture, or some guy just saying so. Regardless, this movie is a masterpiece I remember seeing it when I was way too young lol, good times.

Well given that the resort is so thoroughly haunted as to manifest physical effects within, there's no guarantee that the picture itself is genuine. Once Jack 'sold his soul' to the hotel, so to speak, he may now be yet another spirit haunting the place, his visage appearing in pictures, and whatnot.
