Default Anything better than TX-SR607 @$500 or less?

Well I've been on the fence about a new AV for months. Unfortunately my Sony STR-DE945 no longer will adjust volume remotely (I suspect the VOL board is bad).

I've resisted Onkyo as I've never been a huge fan and the CS seems iffy at best. However the TX-SR607 is pretty cheap now ($400 Amazon) and gets rave reviews at HomeTheater Hifi.com

Any thoughts on alternatives or a reason not to get this?

I've had my 606 for well over a year and so far it has been a tank. Onkyo's do need adequate ventilation, as they do run hotter than some AVR's. The Onkyo's have a great price to performance ratio. I'd be interested to try the two extra speakers, to either add height or width to your front sound stage, that the 607 allows for.

If you can afford $548 this Marantz would be better.

I have also heard really good things about the Pioneer vsx-1019:

Another one in that price range would be the Denon avr-1910--I had it and did not like it.

Both of those sound better actually. I've actually always been tempted to het a Marantz. I've also been looking at that pioneer. Any idea how the GUI is on either of them? I read the Onkyo has a very poor GUI.

It is nonexistent on the Marantz. Pioneer usually has decent GUI's. I personally am not a big fan of the Onkyo's sound--plus they get too hot for me.

As far as quality and features (audio quality being somewhat subjective of course), the Pioneer VSX 1019 is CNET's current mid-range Receiver champ.
