Default Samsung LED fascination

Every time I get into a conversation with co-workers about TVs they always say the same thing "have you seen the Samsung LEDs, They look great". So, I tell them about my Kuro and I get blank faces and when I tell them it's a plasma they laugh and say Plasmas get burn in and couldn't touch an LED tv for picture quality. Do they need glasses or their head examined. Even the new Panasonic plasmas look better than those eye scorching LEDs with that soap opera motion. What is the fascination with LEDs?

Your co-workers sound like idiots to me They probably are not A/V fans like us and just go by what the kid working at BB says You have one of the best TVs available

Because they look good, honestly. They really pop in the store. Meanwhile, most people (myself included up until a few months ago) still instantly associate plasma with burn-in and don't know what they're talking about.

Just like if you asked a novice what he thinks are good speakers he'll probably say Bose's 123 systems.

People have different tastes, I’d spend my money on an LCD before a plasma based on personal preference. They are two very different products that have pro’s/con’s but it will always come down to what looks better to you.

The local-dimming backlit LED-LCD sets are nice.

The thing that annoys me is that Samsung is calling them LED displays...as if it's some new display technology...so people think there are plasmas, LCDs, and now, the latest & greatest, LEDs!!!!!!!

In HT, nothing bothers me more than this.

Displays have always been marketed with a title that described, usually in one word or acronym, the technology on which the display is based. NEVER before has a company run with an idea that they can get away with marketing a display based on a lighting technique...and yet, here we have the same old LCD panels with different lights behind them...and all of a sudden people are freaking out about the latest thing in HT.

That's what really grinds my gears.

Cause people know what LED's are and think there cool as sh!t (which they are ). I'm talking about LED lights in genral by the way. Now people think there are LED flat panels and heaven on earth...and Vizio is KING. just messin with you 'Viz' fans. (we all know KURO is King) know really they are.

Yeah the thing is, I get so many people "wowed" by the thin profile and bright picture that the 6000 series is the most talked about TV on my sales floor.

As xneox said, the fact that samsung is marketing them as LED tvs is a huge piss-off... I actually went around and removed all the stickers saying LEDTV from the displays. I still tell probably 5-6 people a day that it is still an LCD and that samsung's is mediocre compared to the XBR8... but people just eat it up and would love to pay $2700 for a 46" TV with sub-par PQ and flashlighting issues

With that said, and as much as I love the brilliant color and clarity of Samsung's LED edge-lit LCD TVs and how they look in the store, and as much as I appreciate their thinness, I'm not going to buy one due to their contrast/flashlighting issues. My first LED TV will be a next-generation local dimming set, likely from Samsung, possibly from Sony (depending on prices). I'm not going to get a plasma because while I respect the quality of the picture, I just don't like how it looks compared to a good LED and I don't value the contrast and accuracy of color as much as I value the clarity and brilliance of local dimming LEDs, which come pretty close to plasma anyway in terms of PQ. Why do so many posters here have a problem with this? Why are these educated preferences equated with ignorance just because they happen to be shared by the masses who haven't done the research?

The new Samsung LED sets are great..... I'd still get the Kuro over them, but that doesn't mean that many people wouldn't prefer the Samsung LED......

Your co-workers, like most ordinary folks, see "LED=newest technology out right now" and instantly assume it's the best thing since sliced bread...... (OLED will be next, but it appears they truly are the real-deal-Holyfield)

LED back-lit displays are nice..... considering the fact that they are very competitive in price already even though they haven't been out that long..... they'll probably drop in price pretty quickly, and be a great option for a lot of people (and probably phase out non-LED LCD sets)

Why not grab an XBR8 while you can? Prices have dropped and they are awesome.

Well I am replacing my 55" Sammy 6000 led LCD for a kuro. Calibrated it looks amazing..appearance/looks is great...very thin. The black levels just aren't there and I'd say a small notch down in pq compared to kuro...calibrated it would be on par with kuro if it could match the blacks. It isn't though and I have pioneer elite receiver and bluray player I want to match my display. Kuro arrives in a week or 2.

As far as I'm aware the XBR8 series only comes in 46 inch and 55 inch. 46 is too small and 55 is out of my price range...52 inch is kind of my sweet spot for HDTVs...if there was a sick deal I might consider an XBR8 though

Wow. Bold statement.

Kind of like if I said a tuned Dodge Neon SRT4 would match the performance of a Porsche GT if only it had better tires.

As in, not even close.

Ever compared both sets calibrated? Samsungs have excellent pq calibrated....but the black levels aren't near the pioneer kuro. Why I said it be close if samsung had the blacks of pioneer...which it doesnt

Hmmm. So, how much is a Pioneer Kuro these days? I'm aware Pioneer may be disappearing from the markets.

Damn, I'm out of touch with the prices. You can get a 60" Kuro for that much.

These included some of the latest LED's, other plasmas, and the XBR8 & XBR9. In fact, some of those cheaper units looked better, but then again, I'm no expert. I know this is the minority opinion.
First of all, Best Buy has that TV at too high of a markup ($6,500? Are you kidding me?). You can easily get the Kuros or Elites online for much less. Second, seeing the TV's side by side on a sales floor is not a prime example for comparing TV's. Most LCD's you're looking at are set on "Vivid", or as some like to call it the "Burn your eyes" setting. The average joes are attracted to the brightest display and, to most, the Kuro displays will come off as too dark. For some reason, they have it in their mindset that brighter is better. Calibrate each and everyone of those TV's, stick them in an actual home-viewing environment, and I'd bet you'd have a different opinion.
