Default 70s were great

The 70s is probably my favorite decade for movies. So many greats. I was born in '75 and therefore haven't seen any in theaters and have never seen many, many 70s films at home.

I bought Best Movies of the 70s by Jurgen Muller a few years ago. Have been using that to help me get better acquainted with the 70s. Have bought a few blind on DVD, they were ok, but won't watch a lot. Badlands, Klute, Kagemusha, Kramer vs Kramer, and so on.

Did a search here, 108 movies made from 1970-1980. (Don't want to talk about the starting and ending dates of a decade for films) Even though it should be 1971-1980.

Fims from the 70s

Some are classics and very popular like Shining, Halloween, Godfather, Raging Bull, Dirty Harry, etc.

What are the not so popular 70s films on Blu-ray worth buying?
What are your favorite 70's Blu-rays?

Here are 4 I'm considering to buy blind.
1. The Getaway? Bought the DVD, it was okay

2. French Connection 2?
Never knew there was a sequel until a year ago. I think I read it is better than the sequel.

3. Breaker Morant?
Never heard of it.

4. Midnight Express?
Maybe a little known, I have never seen and believe many people have not. I may blind buy it soon (Sussudio I'll thank you later, or blame you). Bought it; it is awesome!

Breaker Morant is a very good Military tribunal film, think A Few Good Men. It revolves around the Boer war and a group of Australian soldiers who killed a Boer Soldier after their friend was ambushed.

The Man Who Fell to Earth is a very interesting Science Fiction film starring David Bowie. Science Fiction fans should enjoy it, thought it can be a difficult watch for some.

In The Realm of The Senses is a very sensual film bordering on exploitation. It revolves around a Japanese couple who are uncontrollably in love, and that love can have destructive power.

Being There is a comedy starring Peter Sellers as a Forrest Gump like individual who falls into fame and influence. An excellent performance by a very gifted actor in one of his last roles.

Though I think the 60's was the best decade in film, here is some I would enjoy on Blu from the 70's:

A Woman Under the Influence
Two-Lane Blacktop
Chinatown
Tout va bien
Across 110th Street
Husbands
The Friends of Eddie Coyle

To split hairs, I start counting at 1, not 0. 1971-1980 is the decade for me. The first year would have been 1 not 0, right? Debate was going on when the millennium was approaching too. Not that I want to start a debate. How about including movies from 70-80?

Anyway thanks for the recommends.
Klute and Five Easy Pieces I have on DVD, watched only once. Will give them another spin. Some movies take more than one. Saturday Night Fever and The Conversation I haven't seen in 15 years or more.

Really looking for ones available on Blu-ray.

Hmm..thats why Raging Bull is considered by many if not most as the best film of the 1980's.....

Hey wait a minute....over in the other thread you said ESB was your favorite of the 80s'..that was the same year!

Travis, 2 years older so I did get to see a few in the theatre.

To settle this argument once and for all, a decade starts at 1 so Travis is right, but when you look at films of a certain decade, you look at 0-9 so Elvis is right. Films of the 70's include all films from 1/1/70 till 31/12/79.

Great films of this decade on Blu include:

MASH
Patton
The French Connection
A Clockwork Orange
Dirty Harry
The Towering Inferno
Rocky
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Superman
Star Wars (just kidding about being on Blu)

There are so many more as this was a great decade and I am sure we will see a lot on Blu over the next few years..

I was born in the 80s but I have to agree that the best films ever came from the 70s:

Godfather 1
Godfather 2
The Exorcist
Star Wars
The French Connection
Rocky 1
Rocky 2
Alien
Taxi Driver
The Deer Hunter
Dog Day Afternoon
Clockwork Orange

Thats all I can remember now, but most of my favorite films came from the 1970s. Great time for movies

Papillon (1973)

An overlooked epic. My personal favorite of the 70s.

Caged for a murder he didn't commit, petty thief Henri "Papillon" Charriere (Steve McQueen) finds himself trapped within the walls of a French penal colony, determined to escape. Joining forces with fellow convict and quirky counterfeiter Louis Dega (Dustin Hoffman) and armed with dogged persistence, Papillon makes a daring bid for freedom. Franklin J. Schaffner directs this film adaptation of Charriere's true story.

70's do seem to stand out in cinema history as a great decade for incredible classic movies.

Patton, MASH, Jaws, Close Encouter.....the list just keep's on going. I would be very hard press to make a top 5 of that decade in movies.

Does it really matter when the movie(s) came out (1980)? The Shining was clearly MADE in the 70's (it started shooting in '77) and Raging Bull was made from April to December of '79.

Even though these two movies were released in 1980, they are clearly products of the 1970's. The writing of the script, the casting, the shooting, all of these things happened in the 1970's.

We can be technical and just keep pointing to the release date, but I consider 1980 to be a logical extension of the 1970's style and mentality.

Maybe a little known, I have never seen and believe many people have not. I may blind buy it soon (Sussudio I'll thank you later, or blame you).

I saw Midnight Express about 3 months ago...it is not that unknown though (the screenplay caused quite the stir, with apologies being formally made in 2004). I thought it was a very good, very real film. The only thing I didn't like was the pointless homosexual angle.
