Default NEW to HD formats and Blu-ray..got a ?

I've been a gamer for quite sometime and I am finally (thanks to a re-enlistment bonus for the Marine Corps) going to be able to pick up a 1080P LCD HD TV to further my experience!!! My question to you is this: I was planning on getting a PS3 (mainly for blu-ray at this point..but eventually games) and was curious if there are any stand alone players that are relativly cheap that are better at this point in time? I understand it's a pretty new technology so they are expensive but as long as we're not talking $1000's I should be good! Also curious as to how the PS3 bluray is working..not sure on the major difference on regular stand alone blu-ray compared to a (from what I've heard) cheaper blu-ray player in the PS3! Thanks in advance!

*edit* quite a few views no replys! I understand that there are review threads but a lot of it is mumbo jumbo! I mean I AM a Marine guys =P so if someone could help me out by breaking some of this down in simple terms that'd be nice too!

There are some cheaper Blu-ray players out there right now, but with the recent $100 price drop on the PS3, it is still one of the best selling Blu-ray players out there. And if you consider the fact that it plays Blu-ray, DVD, PS3, PS2, PS1 and has internet capabilities, it is definitely worth the price. But its not for everyone. Still, it is kept up-to-date with the internet connectivity so it should always run the latest discs and it looks BEAUTIFUL on my 46" LCD. The PS3 is really worth it, but since it is not a stand alone, some people think the image doesn't look as good. I have not found any evidence to back that up, but it might be subject to more wear and tear with playing games and watching movies. But the PS2 system did that too and it is still outselling the PS3 and XBOX 360.
In short, being a PS3 owner myself, I have absolutely nothing to complain about with it and would highly recommend it to anyone looking into buying Blu-ray.

Get the PS3...loads movies faster than any other stand-alone out and it plays games. I have the 46" Samsung LCD...great TV. Def use HDMI digital audio and video through one cable.

Well, if you're going to get a PS3, then the only way you will be able to listen to uncompressed PCM, DD+, or the lossless advanced audio codecs such as Dolby TrueHD is via HDMI, so you would need an A/V receiver that was HDMI capable and able to accept multichannel PCM, because as of now the PS3 cannot even stream the advanced codecs (TrueHD, DTS-HD HR, DTS-HD MA) for decoding in the receiver.

I have my PS3 hooked up with HDMI. My only problem is that my Pioneer Pro-FHD1 is a monitor only, no speakers, so right now I have the sound hooked up via fiber optic since my tv doesn't have an HDMI output (I think).
So for me to get PCM, DD+, or the lossless advanced audio codecs such as Dolby TrueHD, am I going to have to get a receiver with an HDMI input and output, and then run the HDMI from my PS3 to my receiver, and then from my receiver to my tv? Is that my only option? Thanks.

Yep, that's your only option with the PS3. You also have to make sure that you get an HDMi receiver capable of handling multichannel PCM over HDMI, and not just one that acts as an HDMI switcher/scaler.

I've often seen this feature called "HDMI Passthrough," so if you see a receiver and it says that is the HDMI feature it has, it will not take in the audio through HDMI, so you can rule out that receiver.

Exactly, that's what they usually refer to it as in marketing speak.
