The Howling" is coming back.

Indie producers Joel Kastelberg and Moonstone Entertainment's Etchie Stroh are re-launching the werewolf franchise as "The Howling: Reborn." Former studio marketing exec Joe Nimziki, who worked at New Line, MGM and Sony, will make his feature directorial debut from his own script.

Pic's due to start shooting in February for a Halloween release, with plot details under wraps.

The original "Howling," directed by Joe Dante from a script by John Sayles, was released in 1981 and spawned six sequels. Dee Wallace-Stone starred as a news anchor stalked by a serial killer who turns out to be a werewolf.

Steve Lane and Bob Pringle, who served as exec producers on the original, will also exec produce "The Howling: Reborn."

Kastelberg's credits include "Bodies, Rest and Motion," "Mr. Jealousy," "Sleep With Me" and "Kicking and Screaming" while Stroh's include "Cookie's Fortune," "Afterglow," "Dancing at the Blue Iguana" and "Stranger Than Fiction."

Why not? None of the sequels were any good. A few were watchable, but that's pretty much the extent of it. If there's ever going to be another entry in this franchise, a reboot is the only way to go. Do I have faith it'll be any good? Not really, no. But it does stand a very good chance of being the second best Howling movie.

It's a shame none of the sequels were any good because the original was awesome. IMO one of the best werewolf movies ever made. This is one of those movies where they knew what a werewolf is supposed to look like.

In my opinion one of the best, if not the best Werewolf transformation on film. I think you can all guess the other film that's right with it for best transformation. And of course Baker was involved with both but left Howling for American Werewolf.
I can only imagine they'll use CGI for transformation and we'll get something like American Werewolf in Paris or Van Helsing's looking Werewolf.
Please Hollywood come back to the good old days of makeup fx and not computer made crap.

In the tradition of most low-budget title franchises bought out by unrelated concept-association usurpers when the original studio went under, none of the Howling sequels had anything to do with the original (except for the Christopher Lee/Sybil Danning one at least pretending to recap the first movie)--

And is Joe Dante p*ssed about it?

So true. I give some credit to part 7 for attempting to tie all the unrelated sequels together. But that's all I give part 7 credit for. By far the worst of the series, and that's saying a LOT!

+1 I would like to believe that they won't ruin a werewolf flick again with atrocious CGI effects but I'll believe it when I see it!

So does that mean you didn't like the werewolf effects in New Moon?

I think werewolf transformation should be a slower process like in Howling and American Werewolf, not "in the blink of an eye I'm a wolf" like in more modern werewolf films.

The original is a masterpiece to me, to I would be at the same time hopeful and scared of a remake...

I foudn the werewolves in Underworld to be extremely well done (and some of the transformations in the 1st Underworld pretty impressive). Big fan of Raze here

CGI certainly has it's place and could easily be used to enhance the effects in a movie like this. Too bad so many filmmakers go way overboard with the CGI and abandon practical effects altogether. Most times they end up with Roger Rabbit looking movies, like Van Helsing. It's too bad.

I agree with the slow transformation, and it should be painful when transforming, like you said not transforming in a blink of an eye.

The Company of Wolves had another great transformation piece also.

i agree with all you guys, i absolutely love the pnumatics and moving parts transformation scenes in american werewolf and the howling or even using wax and running the tape in reverse like in hellrasier....the overuse of cg to compesate for art of special effects is starting to annoy me a bit

Joe Bob Briggs, back during his TNT glory days, was frequently forced to hold marathons of two or three Howling sequels on "MonsterVision"--
Which created among his fans an entire cult of debate as to which Howling sequel was actually worse, and where the goofball-Australian #3 stood in the canon vs. the redneck #7, or the "Sir Not Appearing In This Film" #'s 4 & 5:

I thought they were pretty good, but I was always disappointed they weren't covered with hair (although you get a better understanding of that in the prequel). I was thrilled when I saw William in Underworld: Evolution.



And I agree with most everyone here that I wish they would lose the CGI transform-in-the-blink-of-an-eye approach for mechanical effects with a slightly prolonged transformation.

I wish they would quit re-making movies that were already good. Loved the original, but you can have the sequels.

IIRC, it featured several returning characters from parts 4, 5, and 6, as well as footage from those 3 movies. It was the only attempt to treat the movies as a actual series post-part 2. Part 3 remains a stand-alone entry with no ties to other films, AFAIK.
