Cool Stanley Kubrick Collection!!

Stanley Kubrick on Blu-ray Dated

Posted July 25, 2007 by Josh

Warner Bros. Warner Home Video has announced that the majority of the Stanley Kubrick library is coming to Blu-ray on October 23rd. These titles include '2001: A Space Odyssey (Special Edition)', 'A Clockwork Orange (Special Edition)', 'Eyes Wide Shut (Special Edition)', 'Full Metal Jacket (Deluxe Edition)', and 'The Shining (Special Edition)'. Each will come on a BD-50 and feature a TrueHD soundtrack.

Edit: Each disc will be sold separately.

This is amazing news. The blu-ray floodgates are opening!!

Of interest is that it is on a BD50... I wonder how these will differ from the HD-DUD 30gb versions?

Please, if the HD Gods give me one wish, it is that the HD-DUD version looks completely anemic in comparisom... that the HD-DUD versions are bit starved, and lacking features. And that Warner finally let's BD strut it's stuff, using the extra space for glorious looking transfers and extras, that will leave every hd-dud owner with a tear of regret in their eye.

Well, one can hope.

Well as I said... "one can hope". I know Warner will cheap out with a VC-1 port from HD-DUD.

If Stanley was alive today, I'd like to think he would embrace the superior technology and make sure his films looked their best. Stanley had a power over Warner Brothers, like no other filmmaker really.

I'll be down for all of these except Full Metal Jacket. I already have the badly transferred one, but I can't even remember why I bought it in the first place. I was never a big fan of FMJ. I love all the others though, especially 2001 which should be awesome

FMJ was one of those early 1080i bobbed de-interlacing masters from Warner. They stopped that as soon as the outcry occured.

Hopefully, this time it gets a new master (a la The Fifth Element).

Does anyone know what is the correct aspect ratio for The Shining? Was it not shot in a widescreen format?

These titles will probably sell a few extra Blu-Ray players.

There are a LOT of Kubrick Fans out there

It was shot and presented theatrically in 1.85:1, but Kubrick also had home viewing in mind, and shot in a way that would facilitate an open matte 4:3 release. I think there have been a few threads about it here.

Edit: Check out this thread, it has a picture that shows how he framed the shots.

Do both. Put it on a BD50. Use PiP so you can compare the shots. Add anything else that can be used to highlight the deficiencies of HD DVD.
