Default Sub Riser???

Ok, I follow quite a few threads and noticed a lot of forum members talking about sub risers. I do not have one and have the compelling notion that I now NEED one. SeanMF, Crazyblue and Gates70 have all built their own. I would be interested in finding out the members that have one, why they purchaed one and what kind of improvements they have seen.

I did a quick google and found that Auralex makes a sub riser that is not that expensive. The problem is that it is only 15 x 15 and my sub is a whopping 18" x 23".

Are there any other products out there that are larger? Why do most of the forum members make their own?

Check out the GRAMMA and Great GRAMMA. they are bigger and I believe follow the same concept as the SubDude.

Or like others did, build your own. I built my own. Picked up a 24x36" 1 inch MDF and a 2x4. Cut everything to fit. Filled the bottom with thicker filler from Wal-Mart.

Check out the DIY Sub Riser Sticky for more details.

I bought a Subdude for my M&K 150 sub and it works great! No more rattling doors and windows and the bass is much smoother and hits harder. Of course, YMMV but it was easily the best $50 I've spent on my system.

People say they're an eyesore but I put some nice brass floor pads under the sub's spikes and it looks great, imo.

I have mine on a SubDude for one reason only--I have a second floor condo. I know some notice improved sound, but I really didn't notice any major difference before and after.

I built 2 sub risers for myself using Big Daddy's sticky. I have one for my box sub and I built another for my cylinder sub. There is even a gallery I have that shows how I built the cylinder one. I also built risers for my front towers since they rest on ceramic tile. Furthermore, I have a set of Auralex SpeakerDudes I bought that are seperating my center channel from resting directly on my blu-ray player (pics in my gallery). I think each has provided some sonic improvement and well worth the time and money spent. I built my own sub risers for the experience and it was cheaper than buying the Gramma or SubDude from Auralex.

Thanks Lou,

I am going to look at the great gramma. It appears to be a little long, about 7". My sub only is 20" H x 18" w x 22" L.

I might pick one up and try it out.

Thanks Crazy,

I don't have the woodworking talent that you do. I might have to leave this to someone with credentials. I did some small things in my re model, but the trim and doors were done by someone with the correct equipment.

But if you keep your sub a minimum of 12" from the wall, it not be an issue.

Unfortunately, my sub is in a corner up against the wall. So I guess I need to look into this?

Come on! Help me find something for my upgradeitis!

Have you thought about acoustic treatments and bass traps for your sub to satisfy your upgraditis? TheFoamFactory is a good place to check out.....

Honestly, my room is not what I would call "boomy" or "muddy". If anything it is quite lean for some reason. I have to run my processor bass X2 (fronts at full and the sub also), so essentially I am getting double bass.

I do get some vibration noise at times, that was more or less what I was looking at. Plus I think it would be cool to have the sub about 20" off the floor. I would like to pick up one of the ASC subtraps, but damn they are expensive.

If you feel like your light on bass, then get some Butt Kickers.

You are telling me. To make special ones for my 2 Epik Conquests they were going to charge me about $961 each plus shipping. I am having something made up elsewhere, but they have turned expensive because we are painting them in Automotive/Piano Black. But, they are running me about half that price quoted from ACS. Had we not been using the expensive Automotive Paint they would have been more reasonably priced. We used the Automotive Paint for the sound and to match the special speakers that we are building.

I have subdudes under my subs. It really reduced the energy conducted up the walls to the upstairs. Much improved WAF.

Well, thanks for all of the input.

After watching "harry potter and the half blood prince" with my son last night, I ordered a great gramma for my sub this morning. It should be in wednesday.

Hopefully, I will post favorable results this weekend.
