I've PM'd a few people and they have suggested that I start a thread with my questions so here it is. I am looking at getting the SR5003 refurbished for $449 total. That is my price limit. I'm not a fan of the Onkyo's, sorry Onkyo fans, and I really have to stay at the price limit. I have Polk Monitor 60's as left and right and the CS2 center. I have an Onkyo sub and surrounds that came with my HTIB. The receiver from which I am replacing is a HT-R540. Eventually I want to upgrade the sub and surrounds also but I'm good on just the receiver for now. I am using the Panny 55 for blu-ray playback and I have Comcast DVR and and XBOX 360 component version not the HDMI. For my set up that I have now will the 5003 benefit me. I looked at the 4003 because of the Panny having analog out but I'm pretty sure that the decoders on the 5003 will be better than the Panny's. Am I wrong? I'm also a little concerned about not being able to use the tone or eq settings when HD decoding is in work. Right now I have to use higher treble and bass settings under the tone menu in my onkyo and I'm wondering if it will lack somewhere because I'm unable to use that. Or it just might be my Onkyo HT-R540 sucks. It's always caused issues like distortion and the center channel always being weak no matter what speaker I put there. Any help is appreciated.

I think the Marantz will be a big step up from the Onkyo. I like Marantz and have listened to many over the past year while auditioning AVR's. I did not decide to go with Marantz, but thought it was a very smooth, musical AVR that was a higher quality than the entry level Onkyo's.
I don't remember if this model has pre-outs, but if it does, I'd say you can't go wrong. Pycroft |

Marantz has preouts from 4 series and above I could not be certain though. I have the 4003 and it has preouts and I am sure that the 5003 has them as well as i also considered purchasing it. With regards to analog pcm and bitstreamed audio I would not hear that big of a difference between them unless I ventured into prepros around the 2k pricepoint. At this pricepoint competition would be sound signature & bells and whistles.

Thanks guys. That helps a lot. One last question. Will my tv still be able to detect 24 fps from my blu-ray player when I use the HDMI in from the Blu-ray to the receiver and HDMI from the receiver to the TV? I've read about some receivers not detecting it like it should. Thanks.

Great news I ordered the Marantz 5003 early this morning and it's already been shipped. It will be here on Thursday. I can't wait to get it up and running. A big thanks to callas01 for answering a lot of questions for me and also SeanMF, Travis, and PitbullMike. You did a great job answering my questions even though you were not sure what I was asking! Thank you guys so much.

I got my Marantz 5003 in today and I have to say it's awesome!!!! It made a huge difference in sound quality. It's very warm and everything just bigger badder and louder. i do have one problem which I hope can be resolved easily. I really don't want to have to return it. I am getting a static popping noise when switching pretty much anything. when I have it on cable and the receiver is auto to dectect whether it should be on stereo or dolby digital it will pop. So every time I switch the channel it pops. When I try to pause the dvr or even a blu-ray there is a popping noise. I try changing the audio while watching a bluray there is a pop. Has anyone had this problem? I saw some stuff on people hearing the receiver pop and it's dead but not hearing the speakers have a static pop when changing anything on the receiver. This is also includes muting it changing source whatever. But it won;t do it when I unmute it. Only when the audio is heard first. If there is no audio there is no pop. It's happening with both HDMI sources and using digital optical. Thanks.

Good day to sns. My marantz also does that but so did the onkyo and the denon that I auditioned. I have read here somewhere that it is a hardware issue and not really a problem with the unit. I guess that is with the surround mode set to auto I read that louhamilton did not have any problems with his but he has his setup for all his devices I guess and not on auto. Just make sure that when you switch inputs to have your volume jacked up to damage your speakers when it pops.

Are either of you using power conditioners? All I have is some surge protectors with tons of stuff plugged into them. I noticed that if I remove any electrical out that's plugged into the receiver it seems to do it a little less. Other wise it does whenever I change anything on the receiver. SNSGUY |

I am using a volatage regulator although I do not have a conditioner at the moment I know i should get one and am planning to do so but at the moment I am saving up for my front speakers and will be getting a separate line/breaker for the HT gear.

"Pops from the speaker output which are random, are almost always indicative of either a failing amplifier output transistor, or a bad capacitor. The pops will get worse, until there is DC on the outputs (which will usually take a speaker down with it), and the unit will go into "protect" mode. If you feel comfortable looking under the hood, look for bulging or leaky capacitors. If you see any, there's a good chance there's your culprit. If not, then the amplifier outputs should be tested for shorts." Sometime next week I'll unwire my receiver & check into this. |
