Default Sony or Samsung?

Wal-Mart has both the Sony BDP 5360 and the Samsung BDP 1590 for the same price. Which model is the better product? The only thing I have a concern about is that it appears the Sony doesn't have a USB port, at least that I could see on the box, can anyone confirm if it does or does not haveone? The Samsung model has a USB port clearly visible on the front of the player.

Thanks so much! I'm really excited about this since it's my first BR player.

Are you sure? I was looking at a display model and did not see one.

The Sony has a recessed USB port on the back of the player, just like the S350.

The USB port on the Sony is strictly for BD Live storage. However, I still think the OP would enjoy the Sony over the Samsung. I have the 350 and have NEVER had an issue with firmware, playback, etc.

If it comes down to the wire, go with Sony. They have great customer service.

Based on my experience trying to help a friend with his Samsung and also reading endless horror stories about Samsung players on here,... I would say Sony no question.

The reason I want a USP port is because I don't have WiFi and would need to put my updates on a flash drive to install them on the BR Player.

The Sony doesn't do updates via USB. If you don't do a network update, you burn the update file to a CD.

Not sure if Samsung is better these days, but historically Sony has had fewer compatibility problems and have been faster with firmware updates when there is a problem.

there is an ethernet connection on the back of the sony for firmware upgrades and accessing the internet. the USB port is usually just for adding external storage devices so when it does BD-live and PIP stuff.

From the samsung site
Quote:
Built-in Ethernet Connection
BD profile 2.0 interactivity lets you download the latest firmware upgrades and more with just a click of a button. Making firmware upgrades simple and easy, you can continually upgrade the BD-P1600 with the latest features.

You can also request an update disc from Sony if you don't want to do the ethernet connect or burning your own disc. I have the S360 and had a Samsung. If you want a player with a lot of bells and whistles go with the Samsung. If you want a player that's reliable and actually plays movies consistently without issues get the Sony.

+1 My first DVD player was a Samsung and was a piece of shit. It wouldn't play half the discs and the other half were pixelated to death. Replaced it with a Sony and never had the same problem again.

Samsung may have come a long was since then, but I'm still convinced that a Sony player beats a Samsung.

TV's, on the other hand.....

Just hope you NEVER need customer support ... SAMSUCK IS THE WORST!
I had a Sony (S-550) and it was great, but the OPPO is the top dog now!

I will throw my 2 cents in with Sony. I have both the PS3 and a S350 and have had no issues.
