Hi ..
I just sold my old Sony VPL-CS2 projector for good .. It's simply not enough for today (not even for yesterday since it didn't have even component). I'm looking for an alternative .. One major problem i faced with the projector was the cable length .. Now I don't wanna go through this same story again with HDMI and the new cables .. So, my direction is to go large LCD/Plazma (or OLED?) instead of projector. This way it'll be just close to the player and 3m HDMI cable will do the job. By large I mean 50" onwards. What are the good options available at this size which provide 1080p quality at reasonable price ? Reasonable doesn't mean cheap, it means NOT Overpriced for brandname or so .. |

I have the 67" version of this tv, I think it is awesome, pq is fantastic, it takes 1080p, two HDMI in + two component in. This price includes stand. http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11222444&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eC at=BC|79|2341|4848&N=4001386&Mo=2&pos=2&No=1&Nr=P_ CatalogName:BC&cat=4848&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1& lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC10605-Cat2341&topnav= Size does matter. ![]() |

Panasonic makes a really good 58" ($5000), with a 65" available in September, LG makes a good 60" ($5000), with a 71" available for $15,000. Pioneer Elite 1080p will be available in Late August, and Samsung 63" for $7,000 available now. The only LCD worth mentioning, and the picture is not great is Sharp 65" for $10k. I really like the Panasonic right now, I think for its price it is fantastic, and the LG looks pretty good too, richer color than the LG, but maybe not as accurate of color. Of course, and ISF calibration can make all of these pretty much equal.

I have nothing but good things to say about my Samsung LN-T5265F. It's a 52" 1080P LCD with 3 hdmi 1.3 hookups (along with various other kinds). It's got 10 bit color and a wide gamut (sp?) backlight. It's got a ton of other features, I'd suggest looking at it on Crutchfield.com to see them. The picture is really amazing.
I think the only shortcoming is that it won't display (without conversion) 1080P/24 or at least it is not in the specs that it will. The MSRP is around $4000, but I found mine on the web for $3000. That was almost 2 months ago now, so it might be found even cheaper. |

Why not a 1080p24 capable projector? They're at or below US$3000 now.

You might want to be on the lookout for the Pioneer Elite Kuro plasmas.
A 50" will only set you back about $4000. I'm not sure if they are available in the US now, but they are currently available in Canada and the UK. Jodi |

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) are not very common right now.
LCDs are really nice and I love my 46" LCD Bravia 1080p. As for projectors, although they get a huge and usually really nice image, they tend to cost more and require a special expensive screen. If you already have said screen, perhaps a new HDMI cable is all you'd need. Good Luck in your decision making. |

don't forget to concern yourself with more than just 1080p. there's more to making an HD movie look great than just resolution. you'll also want something with a good contrast ratio, good response time, and preferably 24p capable. a 70" 1080p TV with 12ms response and 1000:1 contrast won't actually perform that great. if a manufaturer doesn't publish these specs be sure to take it with a pinch of salt.
a poor contrast ratio will result in "contours" between shades of colours, most noticably in black. a clear sky in the background shouldn't have noticable lines as it blends. any dark movie is a good test for this. a poor response time will result in some blurring with lots of movement, kinda like the tracers you see from a fast moving mouse pointer on a black desktop. the night club chapter on Babel with the strobe light is great scene to test this on (it should hurt the eyes like a real strobe would). 24p means the movie will play at the native 24fps it was filmed at. think of playing it at 30p like getting 6 stutter frames every second. this is most apparent during slow panning. good luck on your TV hunt! |
