Good list. I agree on TWBB, LOTR, Departed, NCFOM, and Children of Men.

I'd add Gladiator, The Dark Knight, Inglorious Basterds, Walle and Pan's Labyrinth in there.

Good movies, but it isn't even close to my list.

City of God, Almost Famous, Moulin Rouge (stop laughing it was a great movie), Waking Life, Brick, Sideways. At least one of those should be on there.

American Beauty came out in 1999, great movie though.

Agree with most of them...INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, CHICAGO, KILL BILL and some other fine film are films that truly have a big cultural/cinematic impact...but nevertheless, all of their picks are great films.

And I would pick HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG over MYSTIC RIVER anyday.

More hits than misses for me I guess. I'm surprised Mulholland Drive is ranked that high (although I loved it myself). I agree with others that Inglourious Basterds should be on there.

I really need to see There Will Be Blood one of these days.

I liked his list for Top 10 of 2009 better.

Where The Wild Things Are came in at #6 with this review:

"Some readers thought I lost my s#!^ falling so hard for the penetrating look into childhood that director Spike Jonze made of Maurice Sendak's kid classic. Jonze is an untamed visionary, and if he wants to combine the superlative young actor Max Records with nine-foot puppets, let him. All the joy and misplaced rage that goes into being a kid is in this movie. In time, you'll know I'm right. Apologies accepted."

Possibly the best thing I've seen Travers write all year.

As for Top 10 of the decade I had some quibbles, but I liked most of the choices. The bottom line is that it's hard to choose just 10 excellent films for the decade since there have been many more. In a day and age when more people would rather believe that film is dead and there is nothing good left, I tend to believe that most of these people focus only on the amount of crap that comes out versus the amount of quality work. Film geeks tend to be pessimistic a-holes, but they should learn to count their blessings and see how many truly excellent films have come out in the past decade.

Good list, I'm not a big fan of LOTR or TWBB but History of Violence, The Departed, Incredibles and Children of Men are all outstanding films.

havent seen them all, but great call on TWBB at #1. also LOTR and NCFOM deserve spots, but i'll need to revisit Children of Men, the premise didnt seem to make sense to me. on Brokeback, a good film, but i thinks its reach outdoes its grasp.

This would be my top 10 of the 2000's in no particular order*
The Departed
Snatch
Donnie Darko
Punch-Drunk Love
Kill Bill vol1
Kill Bill vol2
Watchmen
Gran Torino
Sin City
There Will Be Blood
* I haven't seen Inglorious Bastards yet so that might sneak into the top 10.
While I did enjoy them, IMO Children Of Men, Brokeback Mountain, the Dark Knight & The LOTR trilogy are vastly overrated.

Other notables from this decade
No Country For Old Men
Million Dollar Baby
Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind
Almost Famous
Lost In Translation
Remember The Titans
Ray

And of course the great comedies...
Anchor Man
Step Brothers
Kung Pow: Enter The fist
Bad Santa
Napolean Dynamite
The Hangover
Superbad
Wedding Crashers
Forgetting Sara Marshall

I'll be completely honest....I think it's a very poor list (imo), with the LOTR trilogy being the only deserving one on the list, although I don't even think that should be on the list because it's not fair to include all three films in making the determination. As much as I like the trilogy, none of the movies individually deserve to be on the list, although collectively they do.

It's not to say I don't like any of the films on the list--I do. I think Mystic River and Children of Men are excellent films. However, this list exemplies why I've always had little respect for Travers as a reviewer. His reviews are baffling at times, he prefers domestic decent budget sized films, and he has very little film insight.

You are correct sir. I edited my post and replaced it with Pan's Labyrinth

I'm not sure how Children of Men is vastly overrated when it received very little financial success, not even making back its budget, and was only nominated for three academy awards. Yes, it received widespread critical acclaim, but I'm not sure how you can say a film based on those merits is "vastly overrated."

I like the inclusion of Cinderella Man, which I thought got unfairly ignored. It is an excellent film.

Never saw There Will Be Blood before. Is it worthy of being a #1 movie of the decade? I'll have to watch for myself.

I'd add Inglorious Bastards, Watchmen, The Dark Knight and THe Departed.

Glad someone sees that, I fell in love with this movie right away in the theaters. Great piece of filmmaking.
