Default BD-J limits number of viewings?

Is it true that future plans for BD-J may include selling blu-ray movie discs that become useless after a certain number of views?

I read that this is indeed a possibility with BD-J, and that the option for doing so with the technology is there.

How would the disc know?

It would have to access a central database, but considering that ethernet is not mandatory, this is pretty impossible.

Um, since BD-J could create a virtual machine that stays in persistant storage, I would think the applet in memory could simply count the number of times a disk was played. Of course, that would only work in machines with persistent memory, so it wouldn't be possible to build a unified sales architecture around it.

Also, the studios would be pissing off the very crowd trying hardest to avoid the rental-based media market. I highly doubt there is (or ever will be) any serious attempt to find a way to impliment this on HD optical media.

VOD and DLs on the other hand...

Only if the persistent memory is massive. Right now, there is a minimum for Profile 1.1 (512kb) and BD-Live (1GB?). It could work except that the studio creating these discs would have to rely on the user not watching a lot of discs.

A DIVX-like methodology like this may require a new kind of player. Just like there is a special screener DVD player that Academy voters can watch movies at home that have yet to be released yet on DVD.

BD-J makes it pretty much possible to do almost anything.

HDi makes it possible to have extras on a disc that you can only watch if you connect to the internet. This was demonstrated on Freedom Part 1.

It is up to us to tell the studios to go to hell if they have features that we don't like.

This sounds like more of an option for software (Microsoft's ears perk up). Only available for install a certain number of times and then, gone! Also sounds a bit, "Inspector Gadget"...

beware, this thread will self destruct in 20 more postings....

I suppose it is a possibility. BD-J is a full application language, so clearly they could do it. But, I've heard of no plans.

But, it would be easier with a format with mandatory Internet access. Is there such a thing?

I would expect there is enough scripting capability in HDi to do it too.

There's always someone out there pushing the next anti-Blu-ray rumour. I've always figured Blu-ray had the win from the beginning because so much of HD DVD propaganda is anti-Blu ray instead of pro-HD DVD.

As I used to say on AVS:

Instead of telling us all the time why we shouldn't buy Blu-ray, how about telling us why we should buy HD DVD.

And a certain Microsoft vice president is responsible for a disturbing number of the rumours:

Let's see:

- DL BD-50 is science fiction (clearly nonsense)
- Blu-ray will never be cheaper to make than HD DVD (already wrong for BD-50 v. combos)
- BD+ will aid hackers
- HD PiP has been removed from the BD Profile 1.1 (complete nonsense)

Counter-rumour (baseless): Funny how a format with mandatory Internet connectivity and a browser-type interactive system from Microsoft is expected to be totally trusted. Goodness knows there have been no issues with such things in the past.
