Default Samsung BP-P3600 can't get past opening screen

After a firmware update to the latest today via CAT5, upon rebooting, I can not get past the welcome blue screen where it asks ABCD for the online streaming types. When I hold down the Skip button on the unit for 5 seconds (to reset to factory settings) a menu pops up for a split second and disappears behind the blue screen. Because of this I can not select options from the initial setup screen, thus making this unit a brick.

Has anyone seen this before? If so, how can I access the hidden menu initial-setup screen? Why would that silly ABCD selection screen pop up first everytime? If my unit was not connected to the net, then there's no reason to show the screen anyway.

Thanks!
