A little confused by some of the movies in the poll that he didn't write OR direct....?
Anyway, I may be in the minority, but I believe The Abyss is one of his most powerful AND mature works to date (namely the directors cut). I love Aliens and Terminator 1 and 2 (not so much True Lies), but The Abyss has always felt the most "real" to me in regards to the characters, their dialogue, and their motivations (with Sarah Connor--by herself--trailing very close behind). IMO, it's a wonderful romance wrapped up in a compelling and meaningful underwater science fiction tale. |

I felt Sarah Connor in T1 and T2 was extremely well written. We had a solid understanding of where she came from, her hesitations, confusions, attitudes and thought processes as they developed over time. The group of marines in Aliens were fun to watch and well written enough to be interesting characters, but aside from them wanting to kill aliens, we really knew nothing about them. I thought the Abyss really demonstrated Cameron's ability to create compelling characters whom we could invest in over the course of the story (and sadly, I don't believe this ability has much been used in his other movies, although it's definitely crept up again in Avatar imo).

He wrote the original script for Rambo II but it was heavily changed into the final version. He gets credited because key elements remained.
