Default Finishing Basement, putting a HT inside-

hello, i am finishing my basement this year- closing a part of my basement into a room- hence " home theater of sorts".

here's a dilemma, i have nothing. all i have is a HDtv that i am happy with ( 47 inch :/, but if i need to, i guess ill upgrade)

i don;t know anything about surroundsound systems- so

which surround sound setup is the best? ( my price range is 500-700)

How do i soundproof it?

...and that's all i need to know. any help would be gladly appreciated thank you.

For 500-700 it won't be easy to put together a receiver and 5.1 system. If you really can't spend more than $700, I would recommend starting with 2 channel and working your way up.

Anyways for your system here is a 2 channel start.

Onkyo 607 Receiver: $370 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-133-_-Product

Left and Right Front Channel- Energy C 300 Tower $130 each http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo...0%20%20%20SCHE (great price on these speakers)

That totals $630. Leaves you a few bucks to buy some speaker wires and whatever else.

Wondering also what you have for a dvd/blu-ray player and how big this finished room will end up being.

you probably want to start with an HTIB (home theater in a box) combo if thats your price range.

Onkyo HT-S5100.

http://www.hometheatermag.com/buyersguides/htibs/

Why We Like It:
So, $599 only buys a 7.1-channel receiver and the associated speakers? Is it really a Home Theater in a Box if it doesn't include a DVD player? Add on $150 or less for a decent entry-level DVD player and you're still looking at - and listening to - one of the best HTiBs we've experienced for the money. If you are into performance and would like to have the possibility of upgrading, this Onkyo comes highly recommended.

good luck

Actually he won't have much of a choice at that price range if he wants a HT.

If you want to properly soundproof your basement it is actually quite expensive even if you do the work yourself. Consider:
- Using insulation in the ceilings and walls
- Decoupling your walls and ceiling using staggered studs/RISC clips
- Double drywall with green glue between the layers
- Solid core doors
etc.

It is costly. Depending on the size of your space plan on adding an additional $1200+ to the cost of finishing your basement (and possibly much more).

$1,200 is a drop in the bucket though...... in "Finishing a Basement" terms that is..........

You should have at least that much set aside for "Unforeseen" issues that may arise during the build.

Well, that is assuming you do all the framing and drywall hanging yourself. If you hire it out, that $1200 is going to be much higher.

Personally, I think it is worth every penny. My next build will definitely have decoupled walls and hat channels for the ceiling along with double drywall and green glue. I am planning on spending at least $2K for soundproofing for a mid size room and that price includes doing all the work myself.

I am with you on that one.......... It's better to do it right the first time, rather than "making due" with what you did long term, or worse yet, "re-doing" it the right way after finding out your not satisfied with the results.

The scope of what I would want/need to do is the reason a new build hasn't happened yet
