Default DirecTV 3-D Channel

Over the past few days there have been announcements that DirecTV is launching a new satellite to handle the first ever 3D HDTV channel.

http://dvice.com/archives/2009/12/directv-to-debu.php

And it has been announced that all HDMI 1.3 BD Live capable blu-ray players will be able to play 3D blu-rays... although not at full 1080P.

I accidentally put this in the wrong forum. I've already requested a mod move it. Sorry.

O.K. i'm not understanding this, i keep up with the latest technologies, but 3D TV, come on... how can they talk 3D TV, when they don't have the HD content right, one minute it's 4:3 SD then 16:9 HD then 16:9 up scaling and so on, i think they need to get there s**t together and do one thing at a time.

I agree. I mean I don't understand why the companies are even investing for such an idea at this time right now. With the money invested in this project, it could be better off used for improving compression techniques. Also, if you don't even have a 3D capable TV, you probably need the goggles that are used in cinemas, which would feel cumbersome, even if you are already wearing a pair of glasses. I would like to see something like this one day, but its a bit too soon to be investing for 3DTV. Maybe in another few years, we'll be ready for the format.

3D is coming. New Directv Satellite launched last night, new 3D TVs to be introduced at CES. It's coming sooner than we think.

This should be great. DirecTVs 3D channels at first will certainly be checkerboard 3D only (960 x 1080 for each eye) only. 3D Full HD will be exclusive to HDMI 1.4 Blu-Ray players for some time. However this is just another step in making 3D mainstream. I wonder what the first content will be?

I'd imagine sports, starting with golf. I'm hoping that since the timing might be right that we get Vancouver's 2010 Olympics in 3-D.

worst decision by Direct TV yet to date

My reasoning? First they should be charging EVERY broadcaster who chooses to not film in HD. I am tired of having channels that look better on my iphone then my 50" plasma. It took the government like eleventy billion years to mandate digital TV let alone 3D tv. Government should MANDATE HD tv then we should move forward to 3D TV.

my final gripe is I have yet to see a decent 3D showing that was not an animated film in one way or another.. Only avatar was showing humans so far, and im sure the whole green screen takes the human effect out of it still.

I have direct tv, and personally hate the way they run things. Again, GIVE ME EVERY SINGLE STINKING CHANNEL IN HD then you can make a few channels for the 2 people who will have 3D tvs.

If it's the red & blue lens crap, they can keep it! You couldn't pay me to watch that.
If it's like Avatar, I'll watch it. The 3D for Avatar was spectacular! I want more 3D like that!

The government shouldn't be mandating ANYTHING. Let alone what quality of TV a broadcaster chooses to deliver. Gov't forcing companies to deliver a service they may or may not be able to economically satisfy? This isn't Russia. Or China.

I just laid down a few large bills on my system and do not plan on replacing my HDTV (and AVR for HDMI pass through?) any time soon. So let's see... First HDTV was in 2003, second in 2008 so we're talking at least (late) 2013 before I make this leap.

This has VOOM writen all over it. I dont get it, If ESPN 3D launches in June 2010 these new 3D TV's should have already have hit the market months ago. Best case scenerio we need a new TV ( $ 2000 + @ Launch ) and a new Sat or Cable box that may have an 4.1 HDMI connection. You figure the Receiver is not really an issue because you can connect the Sat/cable box directly to TV and use digital optical cable for Dolby 5.1 sound in our current receiver's. Worst case scenerio we need all new 4.1 HDMI capable, TV, Reciever, Bluray player and good know's what else. They are nuts if they think that people are going to buy into that in 6 months or a couple years for that matter. NO THANK YOU !

3D capable televisions have been avalible since April 2007. There is a difference between a 3D ready television avalible today and future HDMI 1.4 capable 3D Full HD models. HDMI 1.4 isn't nessesary for 3D just 3D Full HD. HDMI 1.3 connections can handle 3D at half resolution which is the very best we will get from ESPN 3D.

Absolutely, I remember back in the late 80's/early 90's everyone was talking about HDTV and how the "big switchover to HD" was supposed to happen in 1997, and we waited, and waited, and governments dragged their heels... now when HDTV is finally taking off, they want to introduce 3-D? No thanks. Fix the existing problems with HD first, then muck around with other gimmics later.

Really excited about 3D HD. I hope that Verizon FIOS comes out with an HDMI 1.4 box to deliver true 1080p stereo to my (soon to be) 3D display...

I dont think it is even going to be offered in 1080p think its actually only 1080i if i recall correctly. And besides, if you are looking through glasses, your "raw" eye cannot see imperfections anyways because you will be wearing some goofy glasses. Its sooooo blurry looking that 1080 P will just look like really good blurr

Golf?

That ought to start a stampede to the TV dealers.

If you want to see the 2010 Winter Olympics in 3D, better notify the networks - and every cable and satellite provider - that the 71 million HDTV's sold in the last few years aren't capable of playback.
