He's only "coming clean" to improve his Hall Of Fame chances. He was denied entry in last week's vote for the fourth time in a row.

You = correct.

In the interest of not getting into some sort of morality debate, I won't get into it here about how I feel about the use of performance-enhancing substances in "real life" as well as in professional sports, but for the record I will say that McGwire should be in, without question. Same for Barry Bonds. You've got to vote according to how they performed in the context of and relative to their era, and of course you have to put stats in there as well.

...and...

If you're going to exclude guys like McGwire because they used 'roids; how do you do not let someone in like Fred McGriff, who's got comparable numbers but has never been linked in any way? It doesn't make any sense. The reason I bring up McGfiff specifically is because he didn't reach the magical 500 HR mark, which is like the golden ticket in. Well guess what, the only ones who reached that mark from the same era did so on the juice. You can't have it both ways, Hall of Fame voters! So I guess no one from ~1985 - 2006 goes in. Makes perfect sense, because HoF voters were perfectly clean during their careers — right?

As much as I love the likes of Joe Morgan et al, sometimes they're real ∂ouchebags with their heads stuck up their you-know-whats.

Is it 'too little, too late' where the BBWAA (Baseball Writers' Association of America) members are concerned? Those responsible for electing players must have had suspicions (or at the very least, an inkling) that McGwire used steroids, and that his revelation today would do little to affect future voting. PEDs have tarnished the credibility of the sport, and this latest admission does nothing to change my perception. Darn shame really, as baseball was my favourite sport during the 90s.
