Default Whats Those Big "Weights" on Each End Of My HDMI Cable?

Curious, I know it has something to do with something. Narrowed it down didn't I

Seriously, what are they? They are new HDMI cables I received and they now have those huge weight things near their ends. Like magnets but they are not. Annoying as hell really.

I am planning on taking them off. Anyone disagree?

Im thinking its maybe to help keep a secure connection? hdmi cables are notorious for falling out.

I believe those are to reduce RFI (Radio Frequency Interference). That is a good thing, so best not to take 'em off.

Not knowing exactly, but it looks like a "core filter" similar to one I have to put on my camcorder cable....reduces interference.

Yes. They are attached where the cable needs to bend to fit nicely behind the wall mounted tv. Oh well, I will pick up some other ones.

They are magnets. As someone else mentioned they are to reduce possible interference.

until someone convinces me otherwise, i think they're just chunks of plastic so that you don't tug a 180° kink near the end of the cable where it most commonly happens.

You shouldn't even need those on there really but most HDMI cables are not fire rated for in-wall installation. They usually put those on cables that have lousy sheilding.

They're not magnets, they're shielding basically

You can often take them off and move them to a differnt part of the cable

Ferrite. They are called ferrite chokes. They basically filter noise from electronics.

I was told magnets, but this makes a heck of a lot more sense.

well, it is a magnet.

Ferrite cores are used in electronic inductors, transformers, and electromagnets where the high electrical resistance of the ferrite leads to very low eddy current losses. They are commonly seen as a lump in a computer cable, called a ferrite bead, which helps to prevent high frequency electrical noise (radio frequency interference) from exiting or entering the equipment.
