Stopped at Walmart this morning and guess what? They did not get any of the following new releases.
Boogie Nights Magnolia The Invention of Lying Che Any of the Bourne Movies and mine had not even gotten Gamer or Pandorum yet. Al they had was Smokin Aces 1 and 2. Kinda getting sick of Walmart new release strategy, if you can call it that. Yet they had over 30 copies of Star Trek and the newest Tyler Perry movie. ![]() |

I also don't see them stocking Boogie Nights or Magnolia and definitely not Che....but surprising on Gamer not being out. In conclusion, Walmart generally sucks for non-top tier new releases. |

You seem surprised. Even Worst Buy doesn't get everything, but at least they get the major stuff. However, due to pricing there, I may be switching almost exclusively to Amazon, et al.
Once Walmart made their employees work on Thanksgiving, I decided to never go there again. Talked to my friend's mom (who works there) she said they are also going to be open on Easter and possibly Christmas this year. Sad. They really do have the worst selection, high prices. |

Maybe they get paid time and a half, or double pay? I'm quite confident that Wal-mart is not the only place that does this. |

So then you support Walmart being open on Christmas? Just curious. Last edited by doctorsteve; 01-19-2010 at 01:06 PM. |

If I worked there and they paid me time and a half, I'm all for it. Usually I celebrate Christmas with the family on the 24th and I do nothing on the 25th... so that would work out for me.
Another reason why I don't shop there because they don't include the slip covers on movies. |

I have no problem whatsoever with that. I just don't understand what the big deal is? And Wal-mart is hardly the only retailer that does this. Are you offended that movie theaters are open on Christmas? That's actually a big day for them. Grocery stores are also open that day. Will you boycott buying your food from them too?

I was a manager there for 12 years. So, employee's that have worked for th ecompany at least 90 days are given a holiday pay that is a average of the shift hours that they worked the previous 90 days. Usually between 7-8 hours. If you call in sick or miss the day before or after the holiday you lose the pay. Walmart does not do time and 1/2. Anything over 40 hours will get you fired quick in Minnesota/Wisconsin. They do not believe that you worked 1 and 1/2 as hard to earn that pay.
And to be honest, the only reason they are open on all of these holidays is because people are still trying to get into the stores to buy crap and they might miss a $1 sale on a 2 liter of pop. |

I'm happy to report that I was in Walmart this past weekend and they actually had a reasonable selection of blu-rays - though they were spread out all over the place. I bought "Firefly" for $39.95. |

However, our local WM is terrible about new releases, too. But, i've honestly done 99% of my shopping at Amazon.com for the last 2 years. No tax, no shipping costs and generally quite a bit cheaper than WM, BB, Hastings, etc...so what if you have to wait an extra day? With Prime, i pay $3,99 for one day shipping on any item. I paid $3,99 shipping for my Onkyo HT-S6200, and it was sitting on the porch the next day before noon! I seriously don't understand why people still shop at places like WM and Best Buy with a store like AMZ around, but that's just me...i'm sure that people who do have their reasons ![]() |

Used to be, the people that worked holidays were cops, firemen, hospital staff and the like. Yes, even supermarkets were closed on Thanksgiving, or only opened later in the day. All shopping was completed by the day before, and if you forgot the cranberry sauce - too bad.
As Christmas became more commercial, and Shopping became a Season, Black Friday developed into a statistic - "The biggest shopping day of the year". Unfortunately, now Black Friday has become more celebrated than the Holidays that caused Black Friday to be defined in the first place. We've lost the specialness of those two days off. Now, as if Black Friday's not enough, as if the whole Shopping Season isn't enough, now department stores need to be open on these two days too? IMO, some things just don't need to be open. The stores never USED to be open on those days, and it's a sad commentary on American life that we're headed that direction. Besides, with Walmart's crappy selection, who needs to buy Blu's there anyway? ![]() I'm guessing when Walmart says they will be focusing on Blu this year, I guess that means having an additional 4 ft of Coraline and Star Trek: The Original TV Series. |
