I know I thought it was a grindhouse title, but seriously a preacher with a machine gun is the only way you're gonna get me to listen to "the good book" I think I'm gonna have to read the autobiography of the machine gun preacher to see just what this guy is all about.

Marc Forster’s MACHINE GUN PREACHER Starts Filming This Summer With Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan, and Michael Shannon Set to Star

Marc Forster’s drama Machine Gun Preacher has finally gotten its start date as well as some new co-stars. Gerard Butler was already set to star as Sam Childers, a biker and drug dealer who found religion and fought against rebels in Uganda and the Sudan who kidnapped kids and forced them into lives of sex slavery or turned them into child soldiers. According to Deadline, Lionsgate and Mandate International will distribute the film, and shooting will begin sometime this summer. Michelle Monaghan will co-star as Sam Childers’ wife Lynn, who stays behind in Detroit while her husband goes to Africa to build an orphanage. Michael Shannon is reportedly in talks to play a friend of Childers. Marc Forster, Gary Safady, Craig Chapman, Robbie Brenner and Debora Giarranta will produce based on Jason Keller’s script, which is based on Sam Childers’ memoir. Michelle Monaghan can next be seen in Sofia Coppola’s next film Somewhere and in Todd Phillips’ Due Date.

At soon as I read the words Machine Gun Preacher my mind immediatley went to Wolfwood from Trigun. This actually sounds pretty interesting and Butler has proved he can duke it out pretty good.

Yeah when I first read and posted about this guy when I created the thread, I checked out his book, and trust me it's going to be one very interestingly violent movie.

Lionsgate Confirms 'Machine Gun Preacher' Deal

Lionsgate has formally announced its acquisition of North American rights to Machine Gun Preacher, the fact-based drama about Sam Childers, a reformed badass who established an orphanage in war torn Africa and then supervised a militia to protect the kids. The film stars Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Shannon, with Marc Forster directing the Jason Keller script based on the real life exploits of Sam Childers. Deadline told you all this last month after first reporting on the worthy project getting Forster and Butler in January. What's new? They start shooting July 5 in Detroit and South Africa, and Madeline Carroll, Kathy Baker and Souleymane Sy Savane are also in the cast. It gives Lionsgate production execs something to think about while management fights off Carl Icahn.

It's been a long time since this thread got an update but a release date is a pretty good place to start. Now if we could just get a damned trailer or at least some photos...September ain't too far away.

Relativity Taking Over Distribution Of 'Preacher' From Lionsgate; Release Date Set For Sept. 23

We reported last month that Relativity Media would acquire from Lionsgate the North American distribution rights to Machine Gun Preacher, the Marc Forster-directed fact-based drama that evidently features a big-time performance from star Gerard Butler. Forster wanted the film to be released this year, but Lionsgate said its schedule was too crowded (Lionsgate does retain international rights on the movie). Now Forster will get his wish. The Sept. 23 premiere in Los Angeles and New York before expanding wide also puts Butler's performance squarely in the awards-season wheelhouse. Here's today's release:

Beverly Hills, CA (July 7, 2011) – Relativity Media announced today that it has acquired North American rights from Lionsgate to theatrically market and distribute Machine Gun Preacher. Directed and produced by DGA and Golden Globe®-nominee Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster’s Ball) and written by Jason Keller (Relativity’s Untitled Snow White Project), the film stars Gerard Butler (300) in a tour de force performance and will release in Los Angeles and New York on September 23, 2011. I hate the plot, but I do love Gerard Butler. Hmm...
