Default HDMI Jitter - Does it make an audible difference or not?

Every now and then I hear reference to the hazard of HDMI jitter and its affects on sound quality. It reminds me of the anti-jitter devices for re-clocking that used to be marketed for high performance CD playback in the '90s.

Is HDMI jitter a real timing issue that can affect signal quality, and if so, is there anything available to help prevent it?

Just curious. My intent is to not start a firestorm of debate. I simply want to know more about it and any potential impact of jitter on HDMI signal transmission.
