Default R.I.P. Miramax

From The Wrap:

Quote:
It’s been a slow death, but Miramax dies on Thursday.

The New York and Los Angeles offices of the arthouse movie studio owned by Disney will close.

Eighty people will lose their jobs. The six movies waiting distribution -- "Last Night," "The Debt," "The Tempest” among them -- will be shelved, to gather dust, or win a tepid release.

It’s not clear that anyone at the studio will care.

But a lot of other people around the movie business mourned the impending loss of a label that once set the bar for taste and artistry.

Over 31 years, the movie company that for most of its existence was led by founders Harvey and Bob Weinstein brought the public enduring stories that plumbed the depths of human emotion (“My Left Foot”) and pushed the boundaries of cultural barriers (“Reservoir Dogs”).

When we think of the movies that defined the latter part of the 20th century -- the movies that mattered, that stories that hit pop culture like a hammer and left a dent -- more often than not they came from Miramax.

“The Piano.” “Pulp Fiction.” “Sex, Lies and Videotape.” “Clerks.” “The English Patient.” (See slideshow.)

All too often, we may find ourselves saying: Why doesn’t Hollywood make those movies anymore?

Maybe the movie industry doesn’t know how to. Miramax, for well over a decade, was something special.

Disney still as hold of the catalogue, so I am sure these movies will be release on BD, maybe just not as fast as they would have otherwise

Sad news for fans. I personally didn't care for the movies being produced by Miramax. Hope those involved get work soon.

I honestly didn't even know Miramax was still around. Thought the name was retired when the Weinsteins left. Still, sorry to those people losing their jobs. Hopefully they all land on their feet somewhere else.

I thought I just read somewhere the other day that the Weinsteins wanted to buy the Miramax name back from Disney. This is possibly the reason why.

The Crow was owned by Miramax as well. I hope we get a US release soon. Maybe it's a good thing if it goes to a more blu-friendly studio.

All the movies from Miramax (Dimension) will not leave Disney, even if they decide to sell the name. And Disney's pretty blu-friendly, just a little slow...

I wonder if the Weinstein Company will buy back the name though.

I guess now we know why Harvey and Bob were complaining about the name the other day.

I mean seriously, they have to get Weinstein in order {like how about releasing a movie named Hallowe'en NEAR Hallowe'en geniuses!} before they start worrying about Miramax.

It is doubtful that Disney sells the name or any of the catalog. This news has absolutely no impact on future Blu-ray editions.

In other news, Disney said that they would only sell the name along with the catalog, and Summit entertainment may be interested. So we could end up seeing Pulp Fiction and other such Miramax titles released by other studios on Blu-ray. Summit is looking to beef up their admittedly thin back catalog by using some of that Twilight money.
